A Taca A-321 was arriving from El Salvador during some heavy rain and blew at least one tire on landing causing the plane to skid down the runway, ending up perpendicular to the intended direction of travel. No injuries but it did shut down the airport for a few hours as they replaced tire(s) and moved the plane off the only runway. Details and a photo here: http://avherald.com/h?article=457a5055&opt=1

That said, Taca has a good safety record including an almost miraculous dual-engine flame-out, dead stick landing by a one-eyed pilot on a levy outside New Orleans in 1988 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TACA_Flight_110). I wouldn't hesitate to fly them...

Wow, now this would have scared the crap out of me.

I would have been praying to God, " Please , I'm sorry for all the bad stuff, for all the chicas. I promise I'll stop."

Then as soon as we came to a stop and I was standing at baggage claim, I'd be looking at the Duty Free store.

would like to know if the tires were old or the plane landed too hard on one side. coming in from LA it is always a big left turn into the SJ airport and i have seen the ground coming up fast while the plane is still at a decent angle. to the point i thought the wing is going touch first.
the left side of the plane definitely touched first and it was like a shock absorber but i'm sure those tires were under a lot of pressure.

Not that it makes much of a difference, it was flight LR 621 not A321. Correct in being the 4 p.m. flight from El Salvadore. I was there picking up a fellow CRT and had to wait for 2 hours. The traffic going back to San Jose was some of the worst I've ever witnessed. Luckily, my guy said he was asleep when it landed and blew. He said it woke him up but didn't know what all the commotion was about.

PVT was describing the type of plane A321, as in Airbus 321, not the flight number.

If you are coming in from LA non-stop, you would be on heading 150 or so (I don't know the exact route). I thought they always go around and use runway 07 because it's the only one with ILS. At least everytime I flew in from El Sal/Guate, it was on 7. But if there are really strong winds from the east, they may prefer to land on 25 into the wind. Plus, I believe that LA flight comes in the morning, so they really wouln't need the ILS, it's still nice out, they could just land visually, without ILS. I'm not doubting you, but I'm not sure why the controller would vector the plane to have to make such a sharp turn onto such a short final since there is no obstruction (mountains, buildings, etc) for miles coming in from the west. Cheap bastards in TACA probably just wanted to come straight in to save a little gas.

Or maybe it was the one eyed pilot showing off. We actually reviewed that Taca flight which landed on a levy in New Orleans with no engines in my flight class. That was a friggin miracle.

Apart from the 2008 Tegucigalpa Honduras crash that overran the runway, this was the only "accident" since the days of being called Take A Chance Airlines.

not a sharp turn but some pilots do it better than others. the one i was talking about was a jerky series of turns. its usually a smooth turn off the coast and in. i just figured it was a rookie or something that day.

Was on that flight 2 weeks ago from yyz-sal-sjo. Did that flight 3 times in the last 4 months. Maybe it's a sign....naaaaah will be down in 2 months.

Years ago flying LACSA out of Miami, the pilot slam the plane down, he actually landed a little too short, I had to change my underwear when I got to the Presidente.
