During my travels, I usually meet other gringos in bars, at friends apartments or just out and about town. I have met some really cool people over the years, from all walks of life. I have also met some real losers. Since lying and scamming are just not part of my character, I have never understood why people have the need to lie. I have developed a few filters to help me detect early bullshit tells:

If I have just met someone and begin to to hear what I consider excessive bragging, my bullshit radar immediately comes on. Most of us who have accomplished anything in life, have no need to speak of accomplishments, money or status, especially on vacation. Here are several examples:

I met someone at the Dunn INN one night who told me within the first 5 minutes of meeting how wealthy he was. He explained that he flew in by private jet and that he was in town to buy a hotel (some of you probably know who this short obnoxious prick is). I almost decked the guy about 30 minutes later after he was abusive to one of the waitresses.

I met a dude through a friend in an El Centro (MDE) restaurant. Within 10 minutes he explained to me how he had recently retired as a CIA operative in Costa Rica....Oh really?, What a fuckin loser. I could not get away fast enough from this douche.

I met another dude in MDE that explained how he beat the crap out of 3 ladrones on his second day visitng. He went on to tell me how he was eventually honored by the MDE chief of police and the mayor of the city for his bravery. He was even give the key to the city

There are more ex-special forces guy shit faced in bars in Pattaya then any where else in the world. I guess government pensions aren't what they used to be. Same with various "business" owners looking for investors. I think where ever there is cheap pu*sy and cheap living you will meet hustlers out to separate the unwary from their cash.

I had a good one on my last visit to the gulch. I was sitting in the HLH cigar lounge with a few other fellows when some loser came in and loudly complained that his 'business partner' just bailed on the last payment of the website they were building, and what a great opportunity it would be if someone jumped in and made the last payment, they would then own half the website, ect ect....

Anybody remember this guy? He was a well known ex-pat, maybe 6'3", blondish hair combed back, who would walse into the DR 10--12 years ago, way over dressed with kind of wierd clothes, like wearing a cape and touting a cane. Imposing figure, looked like somebody important. Let it be known to his bud's that he was was a millionaire, heir of a major brand, and a decorated Nam vet. Would tell jungle stories. Rat-a-tat-a-tat. He'd go on and on. He died about 6-8 years ago? One of the CR on-line papers ran a column about his death and his Nam heroics, quoting from one of his DR duped buddies. You guys still around? I think it was the Tico Times.

Small, small world. As soon as I saw him the 1st time at the DR decades later, I remembered him from college. Not friends, he was a senior when I was a freshman, 3 years older, but I knew, and he knew, that we both knew. Incredible.

I said hello, etc. He said I had the wrong guy. No way, too unmistakable of guy, too rare of a dude. It was him.

He never went to Viet Nam. After college, he went to work as a commodity trader where I was working in the summers as a runner, and where I had a bunch of friends including two cousins who were traders. I saw him at one of the trader bars/hangs one time . Asked my crew if they knew him, they did. He apparently did very OK $$ trading.

Saw him often at the DR in my then bi-monthly trips. My hunch was either he made a fortune trading or was possibly living off of the investment thing the older members of this board will remember that later crashed and burned, just around the time he died. Just a guess.

War hero BS artists, like him, are the ones that make me nuts. If you served, you could ask a phoney like him 10 quick q's and make your determination whether he was in Nam, without uncertainty. I did it with him in front of bunch of his admirers over at the tables by the side door one night. I laughed at him. From that day on if he'd see me, he'd go to another part of the bar or even walk out.

So when his death got reported in I think the Tico Times, I sent an email to the editor calling BS on the military service/heroics part. I can't stomach that. A guy responded saying I was defaming this deceased hero and he was going to get his records from the DOD (which I believe you can do once a vet is dead without any legal authority to back you up, kind of like a public record kind of thing). He was going to prove this guy's heroism and service. Last I heard of that.

Those put me into chess player mode with me thinking 3 moves ahead. When I feel a hustle in the air I'm already setting the trap to do a reverse. You are right on about the bragging. I've flat out told gringos to shut the Phuck up, I've been here, done that and heard every gringo BS story there is.

The older I get, the better I was, and I am really old!!!!

Yes, a lot of BS amongst mongers... it is part of the fantasy, too. "I rarely pay for it" and throw in some armed forces combat service, CIA, FBI, DEA and Secret Service, and you have the makings of a master storyteller, who is not only "loved" by the chicas, but by his mongering "bros" as well. The ex-pat communities suffer from those types of "heroes" as well. Find me a low-key amigo, who stays below the radar, or else I turn on the "ignore" button.

I have a pretty highly developed BS detector due to my line of work involving civil litigation.

Not quite the same thing, but during my trip to Philippines earlier this month, I ran into the prototypical loud mouth, Hawaiian-shirt-wearing, cigar smoking tourist in Viking Bar in Cebu. For some reason, this guy felt the need to come & sit with me. He asks me where I'm from & I tell him Canada. He says his mother is from Canada & names the small town. I look at him in disbelief, because I'm from the same small town. I made the mistake of telling him this & it's like he just found his long-lost brother. Guy now says he feels that we should go looking for girls together. Told him I'm really bothered by cigar smoke, he gets offended & leaves.

Not 5 minutes later in the same bar (!!), this drunken Indian (ie, from India) guy walks up to me & asks me how old I am. I tell him 47 & he answers "Well, I'm 56!", exactly like a phucking 4th grader on a playground. At this point, I've had enough of drunken wanna-be compadres & I tell him I don't give a phuck, I'm here to find a girl & he staggers off.

I've had lots of guys in the Del Rey do the same kind of thing, along with the bragging thing that you just know is bullshit. I don't know why they do it, but it's usually fairly easy to see through.

I'm coming clean here.

My first trip to Costa Rica I came in on a Black Hawk and repelled from it one handed because the other I had my M4 no.. M60 I think (think Rambo) and my k-bar in my mouth to the street in front of the HDR. I was going to just fire some shots in the air but I was worried about jamming the gun from the belt feed since I only had one hand and could not hold the feed properly. Once I touched down I just grabbed a genuine Cuban cigar that was offered to me, bit the end off and popped a smoke flare to light it. Chopper thought I need a pickup but I waved him off. Idiot pilots always thinking they know better. Once inside the guy that scans for weapons started to come towards me but with a glare I just stopped him in his tracks. Went to check in and sneered. They handed me a key.

I turned around creating space because of the gun and saw like 10 chicas just staring at me in undisguised lust. Yet, I had priorities. I snapped my fingers and pointed at the bar and suddenly a chica shaking with desire brought me a Imperial (none of the Lite shit existed back then). I cocked and eyebrow and tilted my head towards the elevator. She just nodded/trembled lightly and off we went. I don't pay and she knew it. The security guy who guards the elevator meekly said sir and I just ignored him. Me and the bartender/waitress/companion for 30 minutes had business to discuss. And I needed to put Lucy (my M60) down to let the girl rest and get the k-bar out of my mouth (I still had it there because it makes me look even more manly).

The elevator opened and I just randomly hit a button and noticed that the women had followed me. I grunted in their direction which they knew meant later. Whatever floor the elevator stopped on we got out and I kicked in the door to the closest room. There was some guy pumping away on a bored girl. He looked at me and his eyes went wide and just issued a strangle moan. The girls eyes got big with lust. The skinny guy just walked out of the room and the girl stayed along with my new friend from downstairs.

I'll skip the boring details as even you unimaginative guys can figure out what happens between three consenting adults.

I dare anyone to question me unless you want to be introduced to Lucy.

I'm not shitting you guys. I had a great weekend the last time down. First day had 6 chicas. I was so good that the last two paid me. I bet I came 30 times. First girl swore she had never seen a dick as big as mine. Hell, it must have grown back some since I had the reduction operation. Hard to pick up chicks with an 18" C*ck. Shoot, even Jenny at Relax could only take half of it. With vitamin V does it count if you have it inside a chick for four hours without it going soft? Should I have gone to the hospital. I can't tell if the blisters were from over use or from herpes. Anyone else ever had this problem? Can't buy good condoms anymore After about three hours they just descentigrate. Have to be careful about drinking. Too much tequila and my ass hurts the next morning. One of the best places to pick up good looking chicks is next to the Jade museum. Several of them look better than 90%of the pigs at the Del Rey. The guards at the Sportsmans must have known them very well. They were really laughing and cutting up after seeing us together. The waitress at the bar at breakfast wasn't too friendly with my date. I guess she was jealous. She must have been popular, she knew many of the guys at the bar by their first name. They were great about not C*ck blocking. After she spoke they kind of eased out of the bar. Can't wait for my next trip. Never a dull moment in San Jose.

Worst part is Pops the way you were acting it wasn't that far from the truth.
