Because HDR is located in such a hot spot, I was wondering if its really worth it to stay at another place. Here are a few comments:

1. If you stay at HDR you have to pay 10/girl. But wouldn't you have to pay similar for a taxi ride back to sportsman or HLH?

2. Is the HDR hotel clean? I have been reading its not that clean compared to sportsman or HLH.

any tips would be def appreciated. I head there in November and am looking forward to a great time there. cheers.

Go where you feel comfortable..personally I would never stay at the DR cause I see it as a disadvantage with the chicas...but all in all being your first time, plus you said you cant speak spanish, its not going to matter. Personally I've always stayed at SL...

A taxi from HDR to SL is AT MOST 1000 colones.

That's 2 dollars.

If you elect to give the chica taxi fare back, that's another 2 dollars.

Chica fee at HDR is 11 dollars (not 10) PER CHICA.

Do the math.

Then again, 7 dollars diff isn't going to sway you if your main interest is staying at chica central, which would be the HDR.

Just what to make sure you really got what your fellow brothers told you, they gave you very good advice in 2 quick posts.

If you haven't RTFF, you may have missed that Cujo was saying you will be looked as a mark if you are staying at HDR and can't speak spanish. You will have a blast, but cab fare is the least of your financial concerns.

Always remember, cabs in the gulch are $2 (C1,000)(for a non-fluent gringo). Don't ask, just give it to them. They may yell at you, but they know. Just make sure you know what the gulch area is. Jaco is a little more  .

Take 1/2 your clothes and 2x the money you planned on, you will never regret either.

SL vs HDR.

I've only stayed at the DR once and that was maybe ten years ago and as a newbie I thought it was awesome until I found the Presidente. Then I found the SL when it was just opening because the Presidente was fully booked. That is now my first choice.

Pluses for the DR
  1. Location, location, location
  2. A good albeit rather expensive restaurant available 24 hours
  3. Easy walk to Key Largo
  4. Gambling on site
  5. Girls anytime

Minuses
  1. Very noisy
  2. Rooms not that great
  3. Can't really escape the craziness
  4. Chica fees, those can add up quickly
  5. Poor selection of sports on TV

Pluses for the SL
  1. Excellent customer service / guest relations
  2. Short walk (daytime) or taxi ride to the DR
  3. A nice selection of many unique rooms (though see below my comments on the Courtyard). The Modern Wing is excellent and reasonably priced. If your budget can handle it, the Mansion Wing is incredible
  4. A great bar but it closes at midnight so you can get some sleep
  5. Very close to HLH and New Fantasy
  6. A great place to watch sporting events (you can't chase women 24 x 7). If the game is on any satellite feed you can see it on one of many big flat screens
  7. Good, reasonably (somewhat) priced food
  8. A decent selection of girls at the bar
  9. No extra fees

Minuses
  1. Smaller venue that books up well in advance. You really need to plan ahead especially if you have specific room preferences or there is an event like Halloween or the Superbowl
  2. The Courtyard rooms can be very noisy before midnight. It can be difficult to take an afternoon nap
  3. The good rooms are a bit pricey (but in my opinion worth it. You are on vacation)

Regardless of where you are staying, you'll have a great time in San Jose. If you want round the clock craziness, the DR just might be the place for you. After many trips, I have found that I also need the down time just to sit around and relax a bit. I guess that's my advancing age :) For me SL fits the bill.

During the day, or at night with a group, good advice.

At night, alone or with a chica, to save a buck or two, especially for a newbi, but really anyone, I go the $2 and take a taxi (but not right out in front of the HDR, walk down a block or so and grab one there - the ones outside the HDR are rippoffs, as well as some outside Sportsmans - ask and offer 1000 colonies)

Don't need a meter BUT, if you want to be as safe as possible, look for the red taxis with a golden triangle with their taxi number on the front(?) door.

When you get the taxi you ask "Sportsmens,,,, Un mil Colones ?" ALL but the taxis PARKED directly outside the Hotel Del Rey will say "Si".

Some of them might also offer you a blowjob for giving them almost twice the meter. OK, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration but,,,,,,,

The effin' taxi drivers parked right outside the HDR want 2,000 Colones, TWICE what the regular guys would LOVE to have and almost 4 times the meter (the meter runs about 560 Colones - a little over $1)

There are more aggressive girls at the del rey(not all).
I HATE to agree with a certain poster but being comfortable in your surroundings is important.
Del rey rooms are much cleaner/nicer than they were a couple years ago.Chica fee is now $11.
SL has many rooms that are very noisy till about 12pm.
Room rates at the del rey are now $55+tax.
Food is cheaper and IMHO better at the sl but DR has 24 hour room service.
HLH is a short walk from both.

Wow.

I typically stay at Castillo because of $$$. Stayed at Sportsmen's last December when Bill was having a "sale" and like it a lot. REALLY liked the fact that the girls and my room were right there,,,,,,,

But HDR for $55 ??? Hmmmmm,,,,,,, (hate the $11 chica fee though - what a buzzkill)

Wonder what Pattaya will bring,,,,,,,,,,, :D

The price for a delrey room is $55 but only for the green season, it goes up (maybe $110) when its not the green season so make sure you know before making the res.
