Yep. The only rip off is the bank back home. I still can't find any that don't charge a $5 fee when I'm out of the country and do a cash withdrawal. The exchange rate my bank gives is OK more or less, but those $5 fees add up. Max withdrawals each time helps, but doesn't solve it.

You have to shop around. If you are a veteran you can use USAA, Capital One now has a banking as well as credit card operations, look around at your local Credit Unions most have few if any fees for debit/credit cards transactions. With online banking, direct deposit, etc. you are not tied to your local bank.

They may take some work to find but if you stay away from the banking giants there are banks out there with much more customer friendly policies.

This may help with a credit union choice: http://www.bankrate.com/funnel/credit-u ... 23192659:s

Should have said that I'm Canadian....and for a while I actually thought I could do it through a Canadian Bank with operations in Latin America...but sadly they still charge that fee. As does every other one in Canada.

That's the only fee I really ever pay so I guess I shouldn't complain too much.
