I travel for work, and currently I am in charge of the Latin American market (LUCKY ME!!!). Unfortunately my company has a travel department that handles all our bookings and they have us pretty spoiled, we get high end hotels, driver and other perks, the part that sucks is that most of this high end hotels are incredibly tough on their "no chica" rules. I have managed to sneak a girl in, I have noticed that this works when she is wearing a more "non working chica" outfit, however this is hit and miss. In the past I had to pay for another hotel and just waste a nice suite that stays empty most of the time or is used just because clients in most cases meet me at the hotel's restaurant or meeting room. I now have managed to strike a bit of a friendship with a fellow in our travel department and apparently there is a way he can choose a hotel for me as long as it is within the specs they have for us, so....after a long intro:

Does CR have a 4-5 star "chica friendly" hotel?

i remember when my company used to pay for me to travel to CR...

count your blessings...if your company is picking up airfare, etc. it sounds like you have a much cheaper trip than most of us since all you have to do is pay for an extra room...

My recommendation is let the company pay for a nice hotel downtown, like the Grand Hotel Costa Rica (http://www.grandhotelcostarica.com/) or even the Holiday Inn then use short-time hotels like Hotel Asia for your P4P. Be very careful about most nice hotels that DO allow P4P guests as you don't want the 'guest fee' charge coming back to your company...even if you pay cash for it, it is liable to still show up on a bill as 'paid in cash'.

I've had much better luck than you getting women into my room in busy hotels. I've been embarrassed a number of times. But the only significant problem was getting one OUT of a hotel in Havana. $20 ended up taking care of the problem. I can only remember being denied entry once, ironically with a nonpro. I usually stay in 4 and 5 star hotels.

Sometimes it helps to do a little scouting and have a plan. Maybe go to the bar or restaurant first, get in the elevator from a level besides the lobby, etc. Like you say, it helps considerably if she's not dressed like a hooker and doesn't look like a slut. If the hotel isn't girl friendly, avoid slutty looking women. Usually I walk in like I own the place and she's my girlfriend, not a hooker. The worst that happens is that they ask for her to be registered. If it's a big, busy hotel and there are guests in the lobby I get "0" hassle.

When you say it's been hit or miss for you, what's a miss? Are they telling you the woman can't enter? Or making her register/trying to shame you?

One other thing that I've tried only once at a hotel that was unfriendly to our hobby -- actually the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok. I told the bellman I was going to dinner with a woman I'd just met, and asked him what would happen if I got lucky. I also tipped him semi-generously. He spoke with the front desk and it was smooth sailing later that evening. Checking out the next morning was a bitch, largely because she was loud and had a large tatoo on her back and there was some sort of Thai society function going on.

Tiny, I read your post, and while you give some good suggestions, what went through my mind is: Why bother at a hotel that is chica unfriendly or chica hostile - just so many better options out there that you can use - especially for the OP, who is traveling on business and purportedly wants to remain as annonomus/fly under the radar as possible - use short term rooms, use MP's, get a room for the time you are in town at a friendly hotel - that sneaking ladies into a hostile situation just does not seem worth it.

I don't want to tip some one to look the other way; I don't know how she is going to act in a given situation (the Thai girl must have had zero class, b/c they are a culluture who values harmony, manners, and being polite) and I just don't want the hassle of what could happen - period

Scuba, It depends on what you're after. If you're doing an all nighter with someone you like being around, a nice hotel would be much preferable to, say, something like the Asia. A nice room can mean more more time (once in a while short time turns into TLN) and better experience for both. I do as you recommend when, say, I'm traveling with business associates.

Hotels that are hostile to hookers aren't usually hostile to girl friends and nonpros. You just need to make them think your bad girl may be a good girl. If it's a good hotel and they're doubtful, they'll be reluctant to ask if she's a provider, let alone bar her from the room. Although I have had the staff out and out say your friend is a provider and she must register, usually but not always when she looked like a hooker. One example when she didn't look like a hooker was the Bristol in Panama City. My date was dressed elegantly, but she was a Colombian. Panamanians make the assumption that all Colombians are hookers, and they recognize the accent. Actually, some Panamanians make the assumption that all attractive light skinned Latinas are Colombians AND hookers -- they judge before the woman opens her mouth. In this case the receptionist was right, but it only resulted in a nasty "walk of shame" and registration.

Obviously this doesn't work if you've got a constant stream of different women in and out of your room -- then it's time to go back to the Scuba plan.

Another thought, especially if a person is staying in San Jose for a while so that it would be logical to be in an apartment, would be one of the renovated (nonstandard) apartments at Casa Conde. It's girl friendly and I think I saw Oscar Arias (ex-president) at a social function there the time I was a guest. It's off the beaten path though, about 15 minutes from downtown.

Maybe I was "projecting" a little - and figuring most guys might like variety; I also am not a fan of TLN's - I would also tell you that anyone who could stand an all nighter at the Hotel Asia is a better man than I (was a story told a few years ago; a Vietnam vet who was POW took a girl there and snapped; he demanded to be taken back to the Hanoi Hilton as the Hotel Asia was so shitty - phucking with you, but you get the point - that would not be an option - for anyone!)

A lot of these gals don't get it either - they don't have a separate preppy, Brooks Brothers/Talbots wardrobe to switch to - so they look pretty slutty regardless of what they wear, and what you tell them.

I'm also - as I posted - interested in things that make my life easier, and (believe it or not) I'm a non confrontational guy; much prefer to live in harmony - I hate hassle; hate being in a situation where I could be embarassed, etc - especially for things that are not worth it (all MHO).

My whole point - for those maybe evesdropping - is present another point of view, which you seem to agree with - or maybe - maybe - and I fully realize its not the same thing - Secret Service guys lost their jobs, careers, pensions, et al and were embarassed b/c they did not follow the rules a hotel (chica unfriendly) set out - so all I'm doing is presenting the other side!

I don't think you will have any problems taking a girlfriend or a date to any hotel in San Jose. You are going to have to ask her to dress nicely. Most girls can manage this. And be sure that you are not bringing more than one girl back. Also - make sure that you both look reasonably compatible. If you look like an old fart and are wearing shorts, flip flops and a hawaiin shirt, and she is wearing very suggestive clothing, heavy makeup and stilletos, you are going to raise flags. They honestly have no way of proving she is working girl. Play it cool and you should be fine.
