Don't share anyones optimism on the opening of the Clarion. This week it was closed for not paying taxes. It was tapped up everywhere. This place has been and will continue to be a money pit and the location is not the best place.

It pretty much depends on what audience they are seeking--it's too big if Monger traffic is what they want, a bit out of the way if non-Monger traffic is sought, and Monger/non-Monger traffic don't mix well. That said, I wish any future owner the best of luck.

Good point Jazz!!! I did stay there many years back , when I would scuba dive coco island and found it to be a nice hotel, just not as nice as holiday inn ...just have to wait and see what owners make of it, family hotel or adult hotel.

Could be a minor problem or might be a major one. Hard to tell as the tax police were out in force the last few days taping clausurado on a bunch of businesses. Seems some are for major problems (default) some for seemingly minor transgression (late filing).

From today's Inside Costa Rica

"Clausurado" For Not Paying Taxes

For not complying with local tax at least 38 business, including bars, restaurants, shops, hotels, supply houses, boutiques and retail stores were shut down by authorities of the Direccin General de Tributacin Directa (Directorate General of Direct Taxation).

The closures took place in different parts of the country, all with one commonality, irregularities in meeting their tax obligations.

According to the Ministerio de Hacienda (Ministry of Finance), the closures were effected during the last two days included 15 businesses in default, 15 with billing/invoicing irregularities and the remaining 8 had omitted to file a tax return.

Hacienda says it plans to shut down an additional 75 businesses in the coming weeks, in an effort to improve compliance of tax obligations of taxpayers.

Hacienda did not provide a list of the targeted closures.

The closures fall under the direction of the Polica de Control Fiscal (Tax Police) and with the support and back up of the Fuerza Publica (national police).

Those are small established venues. All businesses have breakeven points to stay in business or make a profit. The Clarion I think has about 80 rooms. Even with a break even of 50%, which I believe is below the national standard for a hotel, they would have to fill 40 rooms each night. The overhead in a place that big is very expensive. If their business model is the monger, then they will not get the tourist especially in that area. It has not worked in the past and the odds are against them. It is very slow down here now, many rooms empty and going for a discount.

They'd have to have a very active bar/casino thing going on to offset the lack of room revenue. It's called "per-head" and counts all the revenue a venue can squeeze per person from whatever source derived. No pro here but I don't see it happening successfully. Maybe those taxes got overdue because the owners just didn't have it to give? I'm as cynical as anybody but sometimes it happens. Or maybe they juiced the wrong folks...

I don't see how they could fail if they model it on the DR only with better rooms. It all depends on the management, though.

well whne talking to the new owner onmy last trip. He stated he wanted to do a nice place with girls and compete with the dr. said he was sick of the management screwing everyone and running a terrible casino. Also we talked alot about the retaurant. Being an ex Chef we confersed alittle abou tthta. he also wants a nice restaurant. Not prentious. but nice. Also allowing girls in. I think the clarion really didnt do to well because of it being in the gulch area and reallynot allowing women to hang outthere. they did alow girls but i used to stay there and letme tell you . its not mch fun bringing a girl in the lobby to check in with a bunch of shool age Dutch K*ds running around in the lobby. ( that actually happened). the two just dont mix. either your a one hotel or the other. just my two sence
