At least between DR and KL I hope I can walk during night? Is it just half a block?

It is across the street and through the parking lot. Well lite and others making the trek back and forth. Not a problem.

Don't worry about walking. It's not as bad as you seem to think.

Common sense is all you need to be safe. The CRT brothers will clue you in on that when you're on the ground.

Just don't walk in Chicago at night.

depends on what part of chicago. just took my daughter there last month and i rarely felt safer walking at night in the city. only a few places qualify but i would list chicago under civilization.

I agree with Whitecat--- I've been going to CR on and off since 1997 and rarely use taxis other than the airport ride.

If you do need to get into a cab right at the DR hotel door and need to go to Dunn Inn, what is the best line to say to cabbie for a fixed price deal?
is it $4 from SL to HDR?

I posted in another thread that last Friday night my friend and his novia were standing on the corner across from HLH and she was attacked from behind. This was at midnight but still illustrates there can be danger in the area.

My novia and i live in barrio amon and as a rule we always take a taxi after dark. just my dos leche

Just ask how much-- they will probably say 2,000 colones ( $4). The price should be 1,000 colones ($2). I walk-- but if your taking a girl I just pay the 2,000 colones and don't worry about trying to save a couple bucks. Have a great time ( I think you will really like Dunn Inn).

i wouldn't be standing at that intersection late at night. outside hlh gets pretty seedy at night. if you have walked past the place and further down the street it get progressively worse. i'm not an easily scared person and have walked SL to DR late many a night but the walk from SL to HLH or dunn inn less lighting and fewer people about from my experiences. there is a back street to dunn from the SL and i walked that one night. there was definitely people in the shadows of low rent tico homes moving around. i saw a guy move quickly across the street in front of me and ended up walking down the middle of the street letting them know i was paying attention. i know i can be paranoid but that night i was a mark for sure.

Welcome to the board. I usually ask the cabbie how much before I jump in the cab, that way you can get a fixed price and no surprises.
If you have an old wallet bring it and carry enough for the night, leave credit cards ,drivers lic., etc...in your safe. Walking is okay during the day but look over your shoulder every now and then. If you stand out someone will always notice you. At night walking through Morazon park can dangerous ...just cause they look feminine doesn't mean they are....
My preference is SL, HLH but thats me...I haven't been to the Pirates Club and have heard its gaining momentum. If you go to the SL introduce yourself to Bill he is a very stand up guy and any issues there can be resolved through him. As Cuba says," Rent the Mercedes instead of buying it." Have fun and be careful.......

Me, too far from SL,DI,HLH,LA,Castillo to walk to DR or KL, I am cabbing it day or night for un mil. Pouring rain or real high winds also limit your options.

Owner of Freebird told me a year ago one of his friends got jacked in broad daylight on a centro side street, a few ticos jumped out of a car, gringo fought back, they didn't get nothing, but he got a fx cheek or jaw, and hand.

Welcome to the board!

I just took my first trip in March and stayed at the SL. I walked every day in between SL and HLH during the day. Some times a couple of times. I never had a problem. The street was normally empty and it was easy to keep an eye out for people being around.

I also walked around downtown quite a bit during the day only. But I never went west or south of the Mercado Central if you draw some lines on the CRT map which I highly recommend you print out and bring a copy to CR.

Have a great trip. And I remember reading someone posting something about being "phucked for life" after going. I had no idea what that meant but completely understand it now.
