Looking for advice on a different kind of trip: Planning trip 8 with a non-mongerer and looking to rent a car and drive out of town to Jaco Quepos and maybe Arenal. WW Rafting and fishing possibly on the agenda. Have rented once before but stayed in the central valley. Have four nights booked at the SL and am wondering if it is feasable to maintain this as a base, and drive to and from these locations in the morning and the evening.. or should I just take a package trip with the shuttle included? Or should I spend a night in Jaco.?.. a place that has gotten so-so reviews for the most part...

Thanks,

phoenix...

Phoenix,

All those destinations are "doable" in one day; however, you should give yourself ample time to enjoy these locations. IMHO, I would not travel to any of these places without spending at least one overnighter.

If you are renting a car, I highly recommend Thrifty. You can rent a small SUV for $40 per day (including tax/insurance). Thrifty maintains a downtown location at Calle 3 and Avenida 13...a 10 minute walk from the SL.

Thanks BD for the advice! We used Gustavo to take us to Arenal on this trip and didn't rent a car but afterwards always used thrifty as per your suggestion and was generally pleased... sorry for the late reply btw :D

BTW, using Thrifty again in August when Luz and I go to a very foreign country, EEUU. :P Not much of a vacation, though... three days in FL to become an official Florida resident. :|

why not get a nice place to stay in Jaco...go to Quepos/Manual Antonio for the day...
Get back late afternoon...have a nice dinner in Jaco and then watch sunset...relax...
then head back in the morning, refreshed and ready to tackle another location.

Those long 2-3 hour drives really can wear you out...esp coming back from Quepos and if you get stuck in traffic or rain, or even worse, an accident on the road.

Hit me up if you need some good recommendations on Jaco
