Late last night, a hole formed in the main road from San Jose to the airport. The westbound lanes of the highway are completely closed. Alternate routes are packed with delays to the airport reported to be 1-2 hours. If you have to use that road, leave yourself plenty of time. Band-aid repair time is said to be two days with full repairs within three weeks.

It will be opened very quickly with bailey bridges, give it 24 to 48 hours and all will be good enough.

Plus remember for all of you coming in for July 4th week that the schools here in Costa Rica are now on "winter" vacation. Most private schools started last Friday and all public schools start this coming Friday, June 28. This alone will make a very positive impact on the amount of traffic around the downtown area and will also eliminate the placa restriction in the downtown zone during the public school vacation.

This is not a public or religious holiday, simply a 2 to 3 week vacation from school for the typical "Indian Summer" or break in the dry season. Incidentally they did just have an article in La Nacion about this and that we will likely not have an resemblance of this indian summer dry period this year and that this phenomenon of the quick dry season only happens during La N*na and El N*no, but since this year neither situation is present we will not have the short dray break at the beginning of July.

Amazing thing, those Bailey bridges. Strong enough to carry tanks, and some have been in use for 60+ years. They won the land war in Europe for us--not my opinion, Field Marshall Sir Bernard Montgomery said it.:

They have something like 70 bailey bridges in use around the country at this moment. An article in La Nacion talked about the extreme poor conditions of nearly 90+% of all bridges in the country. I seem to remember the article talking about MOPT and CONEVI having about 100 additional bailey bridges at their combined disposal for new emergencies.

For the last two years there has been a visible effort to prioritize bridge repair and even more visible action behind this list in actually performing the repairs.

I flew out yesterday just after the hole opened in the road. From the Sportmans to the airport it took 40 minutes at 10 AM. The driver knew how to go through Heredia to get to the highway at a point past where the hole was. If you have a good driver, it should not take too long but definitely leave a bit earlier than normal.
