The big winner won't be the one that loses the most weight. It will be the one that keeps the most off a year from now.

Been hitting it hard and finally got back to where I was prior to a month in Turkey eating and drinking way too much :) Last night my girl and I go out. I order a sensible dietetic meal :| She orders four stuffed cannelloni  Eats one and a half and puts the rest on my plate! Today I am up one pound and she (who is trim as hell) weighs the same

Up one pound in day is only from one thing- water retention. This is why it is best to only weight once a week, max, or use specific pants as a gauge for long term weight loss. As others have pointed out, this is about keeping it off and lifestyle change...

After my latest trip (I always loose from phucking, dancing and working out a ton) I am down into my tight 34 pants. One more inch to go!

PS...have not even gotten on the scale as I have been lifting fairly consistantly- letting the pants tell the story.

I lack such certainty about weight loss. What works for one person may not work for another. I have always had much better success if I get on the scale first thing in the morning every single day. As far as a one pound weight gain in one day being from only one thing, especially the morning after falling off the diet...I would like to believe that, but sometimes, to paraphrase Freud, "Sometimes a pound is just a pound"

I agree, weight loss is very indiviudalized. However, as you say, a pound is a pound. And, somethings are really based research and evidence. A pound of fat, or gaining a pound, is more or less equivolent to 3,500 calories. So, to gain a pound of fat, you would have had to eat 3500 calories over what you burned for that day. If you use the body mass calculators, you will see that is a hell of a lot of calories- certainly doable, but not likly if you had only a bit extra pasta.

Also, water weight can vary in the body by up to 5 percent on any given day. Athletes in weight cutting sports can often lose 20 pounds very, very quickly, and the fast majority of that is water weight.

For my last trip, I wanted to try to see some abs, so i did some intense cutting of water weight, including no salt and some supliments. I dropped a half a pant size, and looked visibly leaner. As soon as I began to eat "normally", the water weight came back on.

In any event, you are correct about how it is for each of us to decide. I am basically focusing on eating tons of vegiies, some fruit, a lot of lean proteans, little salt, and an hour and a half of working out a day to get the last, what I think should be about ten to tweleve pounds...33 levys or bust!

That is true, also true about water retention levels varying day-to-day....and I also must admit to having more than a few glasses of wine with that extra pasta :?

More exercise always makes me less hungry and does speed weight loss. Playing raquetball regularly again is probably a good idea...although our games get so competitive that I have a tendency to cripple myself for a day or two in order to keep from losing (my GF tells me the day she beats me is the day she loses all respect for me and she keeps getting meaner and more competitive every time we play)

I have gone from 279 to 230, but I started before the contest began and will not be down there until late December so I disqualify myself. Still it is helpful to track what others are doing...sure beats going to weight watchers with someone saying, "Clap ladies, clap ladies"

I'm out :(. :? I was hoping that I could keep it up, but with each trip I break the diet and takes me 3 weeks just to burn off the alcohol. I am keenly aware that you rarely see a fat 80 year old man and therefore need to do something sooner than later. But, damnit I love to work hard and then play hard.

Not being mean-spirited here but new research seems to have turned conventional wisdom on its head: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/01/opini ... s-fat.html
