If you are in that area of town and want a meal try Besos which is 150 meters west of Macs.

Besos is absolutely horrid food. You really want to hang out at a place called 'Kisses'?

Everyone has different opinions when it comes to food. No problem with that but when a name of the restaurant enters into your decision making that a bit over the top.

In this thread you have labeled Mac's "mediocre" and Besos "horrid". So what restaurant do you recommend in Sabana Sur?. Inquiring minds want to know.

Always wondered about Besos as I pass it on the bus several times a week. Nice looking place, what kind of food. FYI, I think I got better bar food in Jaco, although I'm not eating that kind of stuff these days. At least 3 places to get really good wings, in my opinion, in Jaco. I have found decent wings in the city, but not as good.

Not living in CR anymore so my reviews of both will be some months ago... I'd have to say both Macs & Beso's are both medicore at best. Not terrible simply nothing to make me go I need to come back.

And ID I can't find anything in my memory banks that makes Sabana Sur a dining destination :) Wait that is CR in general. One thing I do like being back in the states for is the food.

That was the point I was trying to have Randy realize by asking him what restaurant in Sabana Sur would he recommend. Sabana Sur is home to many sports book and other middle class white collar employment opportunities and dining establishments are geared to that customer base so the food is mostly medium priced casual dining such as Mac's & Besos. On the other side of the park are the more upscale restaurants such as El Chicote. Flor de Loto, Fuji, etc.

I would recommend L'Olive for Italian and Rocket Grill for bar style American food. La Gauchada is decent cheap Argentinian (Great Empanadas, Chorizos and Milenesas). Fabrica makes good pizza. A little down the road near Plaza Mayor, I would recommend Fogoncito, I love the Tacos de Costillas and the tacos al pastor are always good. Isla Verde for Chinese is better than Flor de Loto (which itself is pretty good).

Besos is terrible food, Macs is OK, but nothing special.

L'Olive - located Sabana Norte
Rocket Grill - Sabana Sur.(Not bad when owned by the ex-chef at the White House. Not so much anymore (heard he is trying to sell and get out)
La Gauchada - Sabana Oeste
La Fabrica -Sabana Oeste
Fogoncito - Rohrmoser
Isla Verde - Pavas

Of the six you named only one is located in what is defined as Sabana Sur. Reinforces the point I made that Sabana Sur is not the hot spot for dining in San Jose so Mac's and Besos are some of the best of the poor choices available.

Disagree w/ Randy. I've only been there once, but the bartenders/servers were all very attractive. The food was good by CR standards. Better that harry's poas bar and Chubbs by a long shot.

Thanks, for your honest review as well, 8ball. It's encouraging to see the "brotherhood" sharing honest opinions about fine eateries in San Jose without engaging in fistfights.

Yes, I dont need the geography lesson. The difference between 'sur' and 'oeste' i a couple hundred meters. Havent been to Rocket since Jeff left so point taken there. Macs isnt terrible or anything, its decent bar food, my point is the thread starter is an obvious shill.

OH, well, yeah obviously........ I thought that went without saying. The one thing that I wish was still on the menu at Mac's is the Mountain man breakfast special. Not sure if you can still order it, but it is no longer on the menu.

Guess I should also say I don't need the geography lesson. :P

Seriously we all have different tastes in food and for every person who thinks restaurant ABC is great there are some who will say the food is terrible I would never eat there. While recommendations, either good or bad, are generally valuable they are not infallible. The unfortunate thing is that most people who have a good meal at a restaurant will tell maybe one or two others about their experience while someone who perceives the meal as poor or overpriced will tell 10 people and some of those 10 people will repeat the story to others even if they never ate at that restaurant.

Critiques of anything whether it be food, theater, books, movies, art, etc. including by those by supposed experts who get paid to do them are always subjective not absolute.

Always interests me when I hear a guy say this is a great eatery or whatever and I totally don't get it.

And that also applies to alot of chicas who get raved about.

"To each his own", a saying derived from a Latin phrase which in full was: "To each his own is beautiful".

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. How true.

Shows how different we are.

Beso appears to be a very different kind of place. Here's more: http://puravidaguide.com/costa-rica/bes ... -san-jose/
