Just my personal two cents and tidbits I've picked up from clients in addition to the Cocal recommendation above...
1) Copacabana I've stayed at personally. Friendly staff and were doing remodeling so rooms may be improved. My main concerns were price versus size of the rooms. There was also a guest fee. However, it is an adult only hotel with clothing optional swimming pools and a bar that did attract a few ladies from time to time.
2) Clarita's is on the north end of the beach. Has a lively bar with ladies from time to time. Not exactly sure what their guest policy and/or fees are but seems like a more 'party' hotel than most.
3) Poseidon is a quaint hotel with a great restaurant. They are trying to cater to regular tourists as well so can create strange looks from other guests as you walk through the restaurant on the way to your room. The rooms are not that great but serviceable. Have had so/so reviews from several clients.
4) Morgan's Cove is a resort a friend of mine raves about. I think he takes ladies with him so not sure about the guest policy/fee.
5) Best Western is pretty much like any Best Western in the States. They do have a guest fee but are right on the beach and good amenities being a larger hotel.

Hope these ideas are helpful...can probably research each on this board to see what they say as well as services like trip adviser and pick the one that is right for you. Another option is condos. There are a LOT of condos for rent in Jaco. You will get a nicer place with no guest fees but with fewer services that hotels can provide.

Stayed at Poseidon 3 nights this past weekend. Bed comfortable, cable tv, strong AC and restaurant close. He finally figured out recession ain't going away and has actually lowered prices a bit. Popped my head in a room at Cocal when I went to check out the pool deck. Very nice looking, would be fun to stay in one of the ones poolside or beachside. Never thought the food was very much is only thing. Nice having the casino right there. Renting a place is the way to have a really good experience. Now that I'm in the city, thinking about getting a rental house at the beach. Will keep you up to date if I do. Looking for maybe a 3 bedroom with pool.

On the Poseiden, if anyone wants a laugh, there is a review written on Trip Advisor by a lady that didn't take to kindly to our 'hobby'.

Guys, having a brain fart. What is the name of the condos everyone likes that is behind the Cocal? Was looking around trying to find out and came across a couple of scathing reviews for the Cocal. All by gringas pissing and moaning about the hookers. Scares them to realize they are irrelevant outside their little world. :D

Actually one phrase that reviewer used had resonance--I'm thinking of changing my handle to "SleazyPatina"--it pretty much fits.

Post it anyway, expression of interest or otherwise--not like you're trying to sneak in a commercial notice or something--just aiding a buddy and giving the Brotherhood an option--my take, anyway.
