...When it was recorded first by one group and another artists' version is the hit. My first example is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBBY1aysmtg << recorded in '01; later on by Warren Haynes and that Macon/J'ville bunch
I really want you all to help me on this Thread--I believe to my soul you have other great examples ( reggae versions gleefully accepted IF they were recorded first--not hard to imagine with N.O. tunes).

Being a realist, I expect a chorus of yawns, but somebody cares...and may respond.

This just in: The same guy, 7 years later & grittier: http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&featu ... a8ZahBSQtU << Larry McCray may well be the Blues' future--not nearly well enough known

Warren Haynes could do a cover of Rudolph the Rednose reindeer and it would totally rock. He is one of the most awesome musicians ever born. I love the song he does with Billy Gibbons (Broke down on the Brazos).

Why does it have to be the first recording covered as opposed to a popular version that the band is 'covering'?

For those intrigued by Brother Capitan1962's mention, here's Gov't Mule doing that tune in a record store appearance--sadly, no Mr. Gibbons in attendance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxgUjuOj ... re=related

Brother T&V brings up a good point--Elvis impersonators "cover" his style on songs even though Elvis may not have been the first to do a particular song.

The term "cover" is usually used about pop music in any of its forms but classical songs are surely not barred. Check this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqObPtltpvA << Aaron Neville. Feeling bluesy and just want to get it all out? Start with this...

Yes, hijacking my own Thread but not another minute should pass without sharing this Janis tribute/cover by 2 of the best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ef-f-l2Pbn8 << Melissa Etheridge and Joss Stone with 2 of Janis' best

This question really gets tangled and weird with a song like this--a Top 10 hit for 3 different artists in 2 different styles and even the first version put for sale was a "cover" of an example still in the can because deemed "unreleaseable": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Heard_It_Through_The_Grapevine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hR9yLp0g26Q << Marvin Gaye
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0t7Z8MmsJE << Gladys Knight and the Pips
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk3ky3riytI << Creedence Clearwater Revival

Getting metaphysical, Pt. 2 OK now you have two equal collaborators on a tune, both record versions at about the same time, and the greater-known person's version stays in the can. What is the "cover"? Case in point with a second vid of them playing it together:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21PHsqnG-qI << JJ Cale--charter member of the Oklahoma Music Mob, along with Leon Russell
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WUeOEkl270 << Mr. Cale and Mr. Clapton doing 2 tunes
Entered under protest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsIqEq9OFxE << I shouldn't kvetch--this version doubtless bought JJ Cale a nice house, even though it was not the monster hit it should have been. Lynyrd Skynyrd
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70wGSugAfZk << real swell country track by Buck Norris, a nice picker

Another way to approach the question: When an artist takes a piece (whether or not they originally did it) and totally re-imagines it, is that a cover? Case in point:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WUdlaLWSVM << Eric Clapton--the first Layla
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvNIivHdy0Q << Mr. Clapton w/ Wynton Marsalis
Bettye LaVette has a whole album recasting Brit Rock faves--covers? I don't think so:
http://www.allmusic.com/album/interpret ... 650/review
And didn't Ray Charles do a pretty hip job on some C&W classics?
http://www.allmusic.com/album/modern-so ... 680/review

Just for fun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-cz0LUV5qs&feature=fvst W/lyrics in Spanish onscreen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGcUl6vv ... re=related << period perf vid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Mq49lmtEeI BES version by Gregg Martinez--South Louisiana and it's ON
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IopMdolpN1w << reggae version by UB40
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4TIZ_R4cm0 << smooth jazz by Gerald Alston

Brother Boynton chose a great song to demonstrate (tho' he has to share credit w/ Brother Irish Drifter on the 1st tune). You know a song has good bones, has an "openness" when it lends itself to such disparate treatments that work well. Waitin' for the reggae version--I have this to tide me over:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&featu ... 5EYIJmixPw << Neil Young and Bruuuce--grand fun and spot on.

How about if 1/2 a split-up duo recuts a hit? a case in point:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_Q80F1fuQA << Frida of ABBA with a superb a capella group--The Real Group--from Sweden. Look for more by them on YouTube e.g, their Basie medley.

Yeah, a bit political in an election year (ask Richard Lugar); here's my pick:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYvt6ZZ9 ... re=related < I'm Jazzbo and I know it--The Muppets
or maybe this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEUkTYog ... re=related << Alvin and the
Chipmunks

last one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvjbLYXn ... re=related
We having fun yet?
