Maybe a stupid question, but can a dead body just be creamated in CR? Does anyone know? Are there such services available?

Unless things have changed in the past 8-10 yrs, YES, you can be cremated in CR. Friend got married/honeymoon in CR, family member passed away, cremated in CR, canister sat on his seat on the return flight. :|

Last time I read about this the cremation was a little expensive by us standards. I do know it's important to do it all it all in advance. Its very difficult for your family from the US to do all this from abroad after you are dead.

Ya, I probably should have been more specific. The gentleman that passed, was here with his wife, K*ds, grandkids, etc. So no problem with trying to "do things from abroad". They were on the coast, not in SJO. Not sure if that really matters.

What are the odds, if you pass away in SJO solo, your family requests and pays for cremation, that the ashes they receive have even 1% human remains, let alone YOURS?

Cremation is done in Costa Rica. For a U.S. citizen the Embassy requires authorization from the next of kin before allowing cremation unless the deceased has specifically authorized cremation in their will. The cost of cremation is in the $1600 range. Th major funerarias offer a pre need plan. The larger ex-pat organizations (ARCR, American Legion, etc) have contracts with some funeral homes where their member can be cremated at a discount of 50% and traditional funeral services are provided at a 20% discount.

Autopsies of foreigners, not sure about Ticos, are required if the death does not take place under a doctors care and the doctor will sign the death certificate. The cost of the autopsy can also be included in the pre need contract.

Expats can be embalmed and repatriated to the states if their family choose or their will specifies that. All options require payment either by pre need plans or by someone paying for the services. The governments both Costa Rica and U.S. do not offer any financial assistance.

According to their Website, no. They are only in 14 U.S. states (heavy presence in Florida, natch):

I have a friend (funeral director) who owns a crematory. He charges other funeral homes about $200 to do a cremation. Then the funeral home that you go to will charge about $800 to $1200 retail. I have helped with lots of cremations. The only thing left is bones and they are ground up and placed in a box. I have buried many cremains under monuments as I have been setting monuments for 40 years. A tall man might have 3 gallons of remains while a little elderly lady might only have a quart size. Your local funeral director can negociate(sp) the cremation in Cr and arrange to have you(the cremains shipped back)

Now for something Totally Different.......

I wonder what happens if you are an organ donor. In Florida you sign up to be an organ donor when you renew your drivers license. If that's the case, who owns the body after death? Do they have the authority to come and get it-and who is "they" Can the body be creamated if the person has previously signed up to be an organ donor? Sorry to be so morbid, but answering these questions on this thread may save someone else extra grief in the future.

Notice to all lawyers and other legal folk: Please somebody answer Brother Lennydo's questions. The subject is not really morbid but body/ownership questions get real tangled real quick. Any member of ARCR want to pose the questions to them?
BTW, no hectoring here but I hope all y'all, if you can be, are organ donors. I don't know what I have left that's useable but that's not my call either...

I am an organ donor but I have a stipulation on mine. They are only allowed to take things from my left side, that way I'll be all right...

For our amigo...

"May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. May the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, May the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand."

God bless his ass and curse whoever gave him the bad toot.

As far as cremation in Costa Rica goes, My only firsthand knowledge was when my beloved little cat Puki passed away at just shy of 16 years.

I was quoted some insane prices to cremate her here in CR.

I buried her in a friends garden.

That's as Irish as it gets, other than the sometimes included "and may you be in heaven an hour before the devil knows your dead." Still, a moving and centuries old saying, repeated a billion times at wakes and funerals and bars before and after the wakes and funerals of Irish conclaves throughout the USA, comforting and deeply engrained in many hearts and minds, and apropros here.
