planning my first trip to sj in late may. I have been reading boards and it looks like you have to book rooms at sl up to a couple months in advance.... Is this usually true for hlh as well?

I am planning on changing my return flight to add a couple more days, otherwise i would have just tried to book the room to get my answer.

I think like any hotel, they all have cancellations or changes. In the past, I have booked rooms at SL that weren't my first choice, but when I arrived, they told me they had a cancelation and offered me the room I wanted. Also, they are great about keeping track of your request and contacting you when rooms become available. I would make a reservation now and ask them to call you when they have a cancelation to book you for the nights or rooms you want.

HLH has a US phone number that is easy to use to ask questions or to book rooms. The number is on this board some where. If you can't find it, I'll find it and send it to you. Iveth and the others speak English at the front desk.
