I've asked this question to a few people privately, but so far have not got the answer I was looking for.

Anyone know of any places in Costa Rica or Panama to go and see live Flamenco or jazz music?

Preferably, one where I can sit down and watch and not have to dance.

Thanks.

You might have to check around when you are here in the papers and such. Sometimes they advertise places where they will have Flamenco dancing to watch. I used to go with this chick who worked for me because she was studying flamenco. If I hear of anything I will let you know.

Sounds good.

If you don't hear of anything in specific, live music in general would be cool as well.

Sometimes I don't like dancing. I just want to sit and watch/listen.

There is demented trumpet boy outside of the HDR who used to serenade guests at all hours, but I haven't seen him for awhile. I don't know where his other mariachi bandmembers went.
Seriously, I would like to hear good Spanish classical guitar too, but I've never heard of a place that has it in San Jose.

That is to bad, I was hoping that the city would have a few wannabe Jorge Strunzs.

i know they are out there because that little cafe used to have four or five guys waiting to play and these guys were really amazing players
i have the card of one of the guys. must be a scene somewhere but like a lot of specialty niches they play wherever they can that night
will try to contact the guy online and see if i can find anything out
that beats the shit out of just sitting around the bar

Here is a premier music school in Escazu--the guitar teacher is Jorge Santo. Music teachers and musicians are an excellent source for this info, I'd think: http://www.escazumusic.com/index.php?c=bio&l=ing and contact info: http://www.escazumusic.com/index.php?c=con
I understand this hotel (part of a Spanish chain) has Spanish music--they certainly have a beautiful grand piano in the lobby. Doubtless anybody playing there would be helpful: http://www.barcelo.com/BarceloHotels/en ... lacio/Home

BTW, I hadn't thought about Strunz and Farah in awhile--thanks for the reminder: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strunz_%26_Farah
And their Website: http://www.strunzandfarah.com/ << there may be more technically accomplished guitar duos than them, but none so adventurous.

Great info, highly appreciated.

I have always felt strunz and Farah to be fairly proficient technical players. If I recall correctly, strunz was considered a replacement for Al Di Moela in the guitar trio, which says something.

On the topic of techniqual prowess, I suggest, if you haven't already, check out Vicente Amigo. The precision with which this guys plays in unlike anything I have ever heard.

Here's an outstanding Flamenco jazz pianist. Article about a new CD and appearance in NYC, then a clip of him w/ Quartet: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/07/arts/ ... ndard.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRhwV_yI ... re=related << Chano Dominguez
In a more conventional Latin jazz setting w/ Paquito D'Rivera http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ebIYMTA ... re=related
This music is not to everybody's taste but I find it electrifying.
