With today's technologies - you can do any form of software development. You just need to market yourself and also have a EIN so you can work on a 1099 contract. Now that this has gone global - your main issue is marketing and competition. Indians and Pakistani's work for $2 per hour. The average market rate in CR is $32 per hour. Thus - you must convince them on proximity. communications. quality and time zone. Any guess at what I do??

Also an important note. $32 per hour is considerably less than $100 per hour. The former required a bachelors degree and 10 years experience in professional engineering. The latter requires a degree in gum snapping. good looks and 15 minutes of negotiating skills.

Some expats I know are day traders. In my opinion that takes a hefty cash balance, balls of steel, great stock knowledge, and perhaps, foolhardiness.

A good day trader would only need 25k to make a decent living in Costa Rica. 3k -5k a month should do it. And yes, great stock knowledge and balls of steel.

How could 'day traders' make a decent income in CR? Speed and timing, as well as software containing extremely good algorithms, are of the utmost importance, and from what I've heard, the Internet connections in CR, even with a cable modem, are very unstable.

Has anyone ever heard of manufacturing in CR? I have a consumer product design background and couldn't think of a better country to work in.

Maybe not as a day trader, but as a short term investor I can see it working; as long as your internet access is reliable enough to read the graphs and set your stops.

I might be wrong but I think it is possible to get a fast, solid connection. Don't know how much it would cost though. Only saying this because when I go to the office one day a week, internet is fast and have never seen it go down.
