yes. just use the area code you live in when you set it up. have not tried it off of a modem but the reception is a hell of a lot better with the new plus version.
oh and as far as calling around cr, idts. that would likely still be a toll call.

I guess my idea won't work. I was wanting the ability to call all over Cr for no charge.
Thanks for the input.

You can use Magic Jack to call other people in Costa Rica IF they also have a USA Magic Jack number, but not to CR (506) numbers.

I use Skype to Skype (free) to call friends in Costa Rica that also have Skype.

I also use Skype to call numbers (506) in Costa Rica. This cost 9.7cents a minute or less if you do a subscription.

I used a magic jack on several trips, but these days I just use my unlocked cellphone and buy those prepago cards which are sold at dozens, if not hundreds, of stores in San Jose and elsewhere these days. You can even buy one while you're waiting for your checked bags when you arrive at the airport because ICE has a booth there in the bag claim room.
For $20 worth of minutes you can call all over CR and even call back to the U.S. or other countries for a couple of weeks.
When they first started that prepago thing you couldn't make international calls, but on my last two trips I've used it to call home and check on things. You use more minutes for international calls than for calls within CR, but it's still easier than messing with magic jacks, phone cards, etc.

Does anybody know if the Magicjack PLUS will work WITHOUT intrenet access? I know you don't need a computer, but I believe that you still need to be connected to a modem via an ethernet cable that it comes with. It also has to be connected to electrical outlet because since it's not plugged into a PC via USB, it needs a power source. In the commercial, it shows it being plugged into a wall outlet and they say you don't need a computer. But you still need internet access since it's voIP.

I have the old majic jack and have now purchased the MJ plus for $70 and cancelled my land line phone($45 a month) and will use the same number that I had, so I will be paying $30 a year for what I was paying $500 a year not counting the $40 initial cost for MJ plus. I pay 6 cents a minute to call Costa Rica with my old MJ. I currently have about 400 unused minutes. I pay $30 a month for my DSL internet connection, but I was paying that anyway along with my old phone bill.

I have been meaning to do the same thing now at you can port your phone number to Magic Jack. Thanks for the reminder. I also need to port my mobile number which I tend to use more over to google voice as well so that I have more control over who reaches me and where.

My company pays for both my Internet and mobile phone so the MagicJack is a no brainier ... one less monthly bill is always a good thing. Hmmmm .... now how to get rid of my mortgage and still keep the house? :)
