Four of us are coming down April 10-16 and a couple of us want to go fresh water fishing. Is there anything you would recommend that is local. If not, what are our options and how far away from SJ are they. What would we expect to pay for someone to take us out and provide a boat, tackle, and bait?

Yeah, I was thinking Arenal. Maybe there is something closer. Have always wanted to get a group and rent a house on the lake up there. Could be fun for a several day fishing trip.

I've fished with Captain Ron twice, both time were very enjoyable. He furnishes lunch and refreshments which is included in the price. His prices are very reasonable and he offers 1/2 day or full day trips. I usually leave early in the morning and return in the evening. It is a nice break during an extended trip as the drive up is interesting and the fishing is great.

Sounds cool, those fish in Lake Arenal look like a cross between a bass and a piranha!!

If you want to catch some Bass I suggest bringing along the latest invention in lures. It is outlawed for Bass tournaments in most places. That is a lure that mimics a school of minnows. I believe it originated in Alabama but is compared to catching fish out of a barrel. I do not know its name. Have fun fishing, I am considering fishing Lake Nicaragua on my next trip.

Got to go flyfishing for trout in the Rio Saverge in a small
town , San Gerardo de Dota. Lost count at 50 fish,
not large but more trout than anyplace I have fished.
Went with a guide who provided all equiptment, picked me up at my hotel
breakfast and lunch included and 6 hrs. of fishing.
Cost was $350 for the day. Next time I will go by myself
as I now Know where to go and found several lodges to
stay in at reasonable rates and walking distance to

A good old "Texas Rig" using a 6 inch Black Worm, light Torpedo weight has consistenly caught me Bass from Florida to North Carolina.

What you're referring to is not technically a lure in of itself but but more accurately a rig apparatus (called an "alabama rig") that allows an angler to attach and fish up to five lures on a single line, with the possibility of catching more than one fish at a time. It is basically a castable “umbrella” rig, consisting of a hard body with a line-tie, followed by five wire strands in a fanned out design each with a snap swivel at the end. Anglers can attach a variety of lures to each swivel for a look that is meant to mimic a school of baitfish. A photo of the rig can be seen at http://www.thealabamarig.com/images/Mannarside.jpg. You can also purchase the rig from that website if you don't have any problem with "cheating" and taking the sport out of fishing, but based upon the report by Bayhs if you go where he went such tactics won't really be necessary.
