A few trips ago I ran into Ricky (the bellmen that most hate for him trying to make a honest buck ) and we sat at a little bar having some beers ....he bought my first one which I did in return for him ....we shot the shit about san jose and usa for about an hour until I seen a girl that I have been looking for ...for many trips and off I went. My point is ...yeah for years I had stayed at the Morazan and he was there everytime with the bags and his tv demo ...and I will throw him a few bucks .....but all the hate on this guy on this site ....well save it for the someone other more deserving than him .....

Scuba ....that walk from the D.R. to the Pres at night was famous as maybe 5 years ago it was the area where more than a few gringos got robbed or beat up .....as of late that has not been the case ....a few reasons ....less gringos staying at the Pres....the info here was good as in take a taxi even to the Pres after dark ....maybe the cops have cleaned that area area up ....last few trips ...seeing less and less of the street K*ds in that area

Freebird ...walk to the D.R , my last 4 trips I have stayed at the freebird ....as I love the place, price and location ....I walk up to the D.R. up to around 10:30 at night ....and always take a taxi back (and make the driver let me off in front of the gate)
On the walk to the D.R. from the Freebird .....I have never run into anyone asking for anything or found the eyes of evil on me ....as I walk with I know where I am going walk and its not my first time in san jose.

Don't worry, Chilimike, I won't let Ricky the bellman scare me away. I actually don't mind a bellman offering his assistance. That's his job. As long as he doesn't get to pushy about it, I would have no problem with him.

Appreciate your comments about walking at night. Your and Scuba's observations are spot on with my summation of the situation I'll be in when I'm there. I consider myself fairly street smart. I live downtown in a large US city. And I walk the streets here at night. But, I'm always aware of my surroundings and I move like I have a purpose. In short, I make it obvious to anyone considering an attack, that I am not an easy target. That being said, if taxis are as easy to grab as I've been hearing, I'll probably be using them most of the time at night. Especially if I have a fair amount of money in my pocket.

It's interesting that you mention the "street K*ds". The Freebird's website mentions them as well in it's FAQ part of it's web site. It states:

"Do not give money to the street K*ds. They are not hungry, most of them are crack addicts. Giving them money will not turn them away. They will be after you everytime they see you for the rest of your visit."

Most of them are crack addicts? How old ARE these street K*ds? Just curious. I found this a surprising fact from a hotel website.

Thanks for your input!
Paul

Paul,re the "street K*ds" don't worry, its not an army or anything  - but you might encounter 1 - 3 near your hotel, and/or near the DelRey.

I hate the dirty little fuckers with their "One coin...One Coin" bullshit mantra - Had to deal with 'em for YEARS doing the walk of shame from the Presidente to the DelRey at night.

My guess is they are 14 - early 20's - late teens??? They disgust me b/c its a life that could be productive lost - don't give them anything - zero. Also there is sometimes an old American cunt who looks to collect to help girls in distress - she is so full of crap its coming out of her ears!

In fact, be smart:

*Don't give anyone money who hangs out near the DelRey or approaches you on the street - anyone offering you anything is likely out to rip you off - sorry, I know that absolutes are bad  , but trust me on this one

*Don't buy fake cohibas, fake rolex', fake raybans (starting to see a rhythm here, Paul   :P  ) or let anyone take your blood pressure in front of the DelRey

*Don't take a cab directly from the DelRey - walk a little and hail one away from the HDR - and make sure he uses the meter ("Ponga la maria por favor")

*Don't walk late at night and don't be drunk, loud and/or stupid

The above covers about 98% of the potential problems/annoyances you are likely to encounter on the streets -

Chilimike - re your comments about Ricky at the Morazon - All I can say is I guess many on the board never worked in sales   :P  :)

Glad to hear you say it Scuba1. Everytime I'm walking downtown and I get hassled for cigars, sunglasses, viagra and other stuff I wonder who are the phucking idiots that are encouraging and buying shit on the streets. Then I curse them and 10 generations of their descendents.

LOL, I was imagining groups of 9 year olds on crack! Thanks for clarifying, Scuba.

And thanks for the advice. I'm sure I'll do fine in San Jose. In fact, many of the scams you mention to be wary of in San Jose, are similar to the beggars and scammers that I run into on a daily basis in my home city here in the US. It's pretty bad here. In fact I find it intersting that I'm bothered less when I visit NYC than here at home!

Often times different dialogues, but the same scammer ideas. Some of these street scams are downright genious! It's as if there's a "Scammers College" somewhere and these people are all graduates!!!

I'll be fine.

We stayed at the Morazon as usual March14-19. Everything was fine even Ricky but than it happened. Sunday morning just after breakfast the elevator went down. It was still not working when we left Monday. It's a hell of a walk to the 5th floor. But Gringotims 9 month pregnant girl walked up to the 5th to see him it must be true love. We had a great time at HLH as the St. Pattys day party was a hit. Thanks Boyd.
