I post this in this section... cuz this is very important to me... for now :D

Tica does not = working girl ... correct

Tico or Tica are the people of Costa Rica... aka Ticas... correct :?:

I get abit lost in the word Chica and the word Chico

This board would have you believe that Chica is a Puta :?: :?:

From my small amount of hanklish and espanloish

Chica is word for a young lady, and does not stamp her as puta  :?:

Hank, while "chica" technically means "girl", down in the Gulch it really means working girl, and is the polite way to say "puta". I say "chica/s" all the time when in a place like HLH, and the chicas don't mind one bit. :D

This board really should be renamed Costa Rica Chicas, as there are more than just Ticas in the country, though that might be a little too blunt. :D

Chica by no way means, puta. When a man references to a puta as a chica the girls are not thinking of it as you calling her a puta. Chica means "girl". It does not mean working girl. Call them hoes, hookers, sluts, or any other name you can think of other than chica because you are WAY wrong there. Just because guys who are here looking for p4p call them chicas it does not mean that is the word for ho.

Sorry if I sound harsh here I don't mean to be. But for sure you are going the wrong way by saying that.

Since this thread is posted in the "Smack Talk & Fun Stuff!" section, the obvious way to resolve this pressing controversy is to consult Google Translate (hell, it's even widely used in the gulch, so there should be no doubt that it is the definitive authority.)

According to that impeccable arbitrator of all things español:

Chica means girl, gal, lass, wench, cutie, lassie, pu*sy, sweetie, tootsy, popcy, sweety, and puss.

Puta means whore, bitch, slut, hooker, prostitute, tart, tramp, hustler, dyke, and dike.

And, according to Google Translate, Tica means policy.

Hope that clears things up.

By the way, for those of you who have been here awhile, what about a "gúila?" Is she a wench, a dike or a policy??

They use Guila for young girls. For example, the ones walking around in school girl outfits that are actually in school. You can also use the word guila for when it pertains to young boys too. It is not supposed to be used as a dirty word. I don't think they use guila for boy as much as girls here, but that is what it is supposed to be.

Ah, but therein lies the rub, as the ol' Bard would say. On this one I'll have to agree to disagree with the esteemed Doctor.

"Chica" certainly does not translate as "prostitute", but guess what?

"Chica" is used colloquially in Latin America as an euphemism for "putas" in polite company. Spanish speakers will get what you really mean, just like a concierge at a Las Vegas hotel will know what you mean if you walk up and ask him, "Hey man, I need a girl... where should I go?".

However, the same interpretation does not hold true for "tica".

As far as I know, there is no situation where a Costa Rican will understand you mean "hooker" when you ask him or her for a "tica".... with the possible exception of those rumored chicas who are stealth CRT members. :D

And as for "güila", it means "young(er) girl" in Costa Rica, but interestingly enough in Mexico it's used as a euphemism for.... wait for it... wait for it... PUTA!!!

Isn't that something? ;)

While I agree with you that gringos use chica as a word for puta. But when a tico uses chica, even when they are meaning working girls, they are using it as a reference to girls. Not necessarily putas, but it has been assumed that when someone talks about a chica especially in the p4p world that they are referencing a working girl.

I guess we are right on both sides of this conversation because since the literal meaning and the monger meaning are both used very commonly I guess we are both right and wrong......

But at least we got that subject taken care of pretty quickly...LOL

Interesting this conversation. Made me think what term I use. I don't use any terms around them, but guess I just spell it out and say "working girls" when talking to other guys about the subject.

But for gringos in the Gulch or talking about it, "chica" means working girl, no matter what Ticos may do. That's certainly what I'm referring to when I use "chica" on this board, as in HLH chicas, HDR chicas, SL chicas, and so on.

Yes, and referring to them as HLH chicas or DR chicas or SL chicas, well that is clear, but the word itself and the meaning that it has really has nothing to do with putas. It has been evolved by mongers. Because if I am talking to my daughter and her cousin I say, "Hola chicas!!!" That has nothing to do with putas..... That is all I am saying. It has been used improperly by gringos for so long that Sex tourists use it that way. Like the people who use Tica as a reference to a puta. There is a difference.

100% agree. There is no "right" way to use "tica" or "chica" for "puta".

Personally I take the time to attempt to educate CRT brothers of the distinction between the two words because using "chica" as an euphemism for "whore" probably won't land you into an altercation with ticos, whereas at least in one case (witnessed by yours truly) using "tica" as an synonym for puta made the ticos quite upset with the gringo, who as a result almost got his ass kicked.

As I've said before, if after being told folks still want to continue to use "tica" when they mean "puta", by all means be my guest. At least they're not doing it out of ignorance. :)

My dos colones,

mh
