You can avoid them taking your money by not giving it to them in the first place. I was twice searched in a bad neighborhood at night and I keep my money in my right hand. The police asked me what was in my hand and I replied, "money". Nothing else was said.

If they ask to search you then, remove all the contents of your pockets yourself keeping your cash in your hand. This has worked for me twice walking and 6 times driving.

exactly.....and how many more times do you need to be told to carry a copy of your passport with your entry stamp included...shame on you

CRbound, I had my copy of my passport and stamp with me the first 4 days but had gotten back form Jaco earlier that day and left it behind in my shorts when I changed clothes. As for 'shame on me", LMFAO Yea we def fit the profile of possible illegal entries to CR or guys overstaying their time. No doubt there was a reason to stop us and search us other than looking for someone to rob. (He says sarcastically) As my Tica chica says, "a ladrone is a ladrone". Thanks for stating the obvious while insinuating this was brought on as a result of "Not Having Our Passports On Us". Do you really think had we had our passports they wouldn't of robbed us? Shame on you for excusing this behavior by the police. If we had our passports, i'm sure they would have still wanted to search us to make sure we "didn't have drugs". Careful, next time it could be you, in the middle of the day, while carrying your passport, and then who do we blame? Just food for thought. BTW, 15 years, 100's of walks thru the park, I figure it was just my turn. jajajaja

Even if you did not have your passport it did not give them the right to shake you down. If, you have read my story, I was completely legal and they were gonna rob me no matter what. There is no excuse for the police to rob tourists or anyone for that matter. And to say, well this is Costa Rica is not an excuse. I have spent many more hours than most on the streets here and there is no reason for this. I get that people are worried that they may be taken to jail or something like that, but if they were to take you to the jail it would take them more time than it is worth to them to get a ticket written for not having your passport with you. Plus, they get nothing out of it. I am not saying be a dick, but just don't be a push over either. If you want, give them the dumb gringo thing until they get tired, but do no ever relinquish your wallet or anything of value. Of course this is easier said than done.

That's right, Jac, it was just your turn... nothing more, nothing less. Trouble usually comes well-disguised, and when you least expect it... no matter how well-prepared you are or think you can handle a situation. I wouldn't worry too much about the overly-critical, hackneyed comments on how you "coulda/shoulda" handled the situation better. The board is a better place because of posters, like you, who choose to share both good and bad experiences.

Doesn't sound like copies of passports was going to stop these policia perros. Sorry this happened to you guys, another reason after 13 years, my times in CR are getting short. Very different place re the whole security issue since when I was a newbie. I've seen improvements in alot of areas, like the Autopista, more options in the gulch, but the security thing spoils alot of the fun even if you never had a problem, me only 2 minor things, but one in the presence of the police on Central and they walked the other way.

I know this means I am going to wind up headed to some touristy place with little game, probably Puerto Rico. But.

A recent published poll which I am sure most regulars have read shows that this is Tico's number one concern--they are getting hit by this alot worse than the gringos, of course by sheer per capita numbers.

His "magic stick" is called an asp. It is a common piece of police equipment which replaced the P24 baton which replaced the nightstick. It is a very effective piece of equipment when you know how to use it. Police officers are trained in the proper use most civilians who buy one are not.

If I was in San Jose at night and had an asp with me I would take a taxi.

Should be OK in checked luggage. You can also buy them in CR.

I see the police ¨shaking down¨...whatever that means, people all the time around San Jose.

Sometimes, young K*ds, sometimes Ecotourists, sometimes nicaraguans, sometimes old gringos...and they do have the right to do so...as the other poster said we should not hand over the money when they ask for ID´s.

I have been checked 3 times and all three times I was in the ¨Red Zones¨. The police were polite went through the routine of checking us for drugs, warning us about the dangers of gringos being in these areas and sent us on our way

I appreciate the support guys and thanks for the kind words BD. This was information to be passed on to the "brotherhood", nothing more, nothing less. I wasnt looking for approval, disapproval, sympathy or empathy, simply telling what happened the way it happened. CRB, you really don't know what "shaking down" means? Check with Elsilencio and his urban dictionary. LMAO Perfroming a legal search and shaking down are not the same things. BTW, "brotherhood" doesnt necessarily mean we're related, i'm using it to describe the guys here who share common interest, experiences and travels.

Pura Vida boys!

If 3 guys were watching 2 cops how did they take 2 50's I say your friend got mixed up on his count. Maybe the cop was a magician. But to take it so serious and make a report . As in how is that going to help . I think your friend is losing it. Not the cops. But then again I am most likely wrong

Bottom Line here....when it is your time to be Robbed By The Police......there is nothing you can do about...period..... As in this case when the cops want your money or anything else you have on you, they will simply take it and you can't stop them. I agree you can do things to avoid putting yourself in a bad situation. But, I see nothing wrong with walking in a group just after sunset through Espana Parque when there are lot's of other people around. I've done the stroll from SL to DR many times at 7PMish...but...would never do it after 9PM even in a group. I've been in the situation where the cop had my passport and drivers license, put them in his pocket and let me know in no uncertain terms it was pay him $40.00, (veinte mil) or he would arrest me. By the way....I wasn't doing anything wrong...but....I'm sure I would have been arrested for drugs or any other excuse the cop chose to use. You can say all the "tough guy, I live in San Jose, I'm smarter than the cops and ladrones, etc." stuff you want. But when it's your time...it's your time....

If I was in the same situation I would have responded the same way as the author of this thread.
