Is egg nog available this time of year in San Jose? Can I pop into the local mas x menos & pick up a carton?

If it is, I haven't seen it. Just the normal milk boxes labeled "LECHE MILK LECHE MILK" which always make me laugh. But I don't shop at Automercado often, and they have much more gringo-oriented stuff, so you may want to try the Automercado near the Hotel Little Havana. If they don't have it, maybe a supermercado in Escazu.

I have seen it, can't remember exactly where. It would either be at the Auto Mercado where I shop or Mas x Menos that I hit every once in a while. I will be grocery shopping tomorrow and will try to remember to look. Was thinking the other night that I might get some the week of Christmas.

I've had that Rompope stuff before, I bought a bottle in TJ in the liquor section, I thought it was awful.
I'm wondering about the fresh, refrigerated nog located in the dairy section.

Saw Rompope in the refrigerated dairy case at Walmart yesterday. Read the ingredients and it sure sounded like eggnog. It was listed at 4% alcohol and right next to it they had Rompope Navidad and that was listed at 2% alcohol. Both made by Dos Pinos.

Going to Auto Mercado in about half an hour. I'm going to take a look. Not gonna buy any this week as I'm working on dropping a few pounds and not having alcohol either. I will buy some the week of Christmas and will let ya know how it tastes.

When all else fails:

Quote:
eggnog recipe at its best!

Traditional Eggnog Ingredients

12 eggs, separated
6 cups milk
2 cups heavy/ thickened cream
2 cups bourbon
1+ 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup brandy
2 teaspoons ground nutmeg

Traditional Eggnog Directions

In a large bowl and using a mixer, beat the egg yolks together with the sugar for approx 10 minutes (you want the mixture to be firm and the colour of butter).
Very slowly, add in the bourbon and brandy - just a little at a time.
When bourbon and brandy have been added, allow the mixture to cool in the fridge (for up to 6 hours, depending on how long before your party you're making the eggnog).
30 minutes before your guests arrive, stir the milk into the chilled yolk mixture.
Stir in 1+ 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg.
In a separate bowl, beat the cream with a mixer on high speed until the cream forms stiff peaks.
In yet another bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Gently fold the egg white mixture into the egg yolk mixture.
Gently fold the cream into the egg mixture.
After ladling into cups, garnish with the remainder of the ground nutmeg.

Serves: 8.

Didn't see any at the Auto Mercado where I shop, but will find some before Christmas. Wow! Thanks for sharing the recipe. I will file that away although I don't think I will use it this year.
