Hi All,

Is there any way to avoid the high price of a taxi from the airport into SJ central ?

Thanks

Sure...when you exit the terminal, turn right and follow the street out to the main road. From there, turn right, and keep walking..jejejeje...

Walk out front entrance at airport turn left walk down the ramp, turn right walk about 150 feet and there will be a bus stop. The cost is about 1000 colones ($2.00) to main terminal in San Jose. Once you arrive at main bus terminal take a taxi to hotel for another 1000 colones($2.00). When you are ready to leave do the opposite of course except it only the bus fare is only 400 colones (80 cents). I have never had to wait over five minutes for a bus. It will usually make two or three short stops to pickup or let off passengers. It takes about 30 minutes in all. I have traveled by bus all over Costa Rica no problems at all.

Very good advice and I agree 100% :)

Great way to get to SJ and you can't beat the price - in fact, I much prefer the bus vs the vans although to be fair I have only had one bad experience w/ the Shuttlebus - the others have been fine - but why pay - w/ tips - $14 or $15 vs less than $3 via the bus.

One fairly important point - while the bus is easy to find - ASK the driver - "Directo a San Jose?" - in other words, whether the bus goes directly to San Jose vs a stop in Alajuela first - no real big deal if it does, but its worth waiting (and taking) the direct bus from a time standpoint, unless you are dying to see Alajuala

Busses' run very frequently and are seldom crowded (no chickens or goats; its a very good very inexpensive system throughout the country) - I bring my bag on with me and have never been told I needed to put it "under" the bus, but YMMV.

Its really a great option (I suspect) too few guys use.

In 2008 I used to go back and forth every week without luggage. I would leave the airport and take the escalator upstairs to the departure level. These taxis that are there have usually just dropped someone off and are 'dead-heading' the freeway back to San Jose. I would offer 4000 colon to take me to Sabana. This was when the going rate was 6-8000. I don't think I ever had a taxi refuse.

If I had luggage , I'd just take an orange taxi.
