You sure of that? That is only $8.60 at the rate of exchange 2 weeks ago. Never heard of the DR going that low.

Hi DD
If I remember correctly , the desk at the elevator posts the rates ( charge ) in colones , always 4K , I also went over my recent bill for my 3 night stay , could only find the 8K for the double I took up first night , took singles up the other 2 nights and didnt see it added to my bill....maybe a BING discount...

With so many of the guys that stay there willing to pay cien por una hora, I'm sure that another $15 is no big deal. Its just another symptom of whats wrong with CR these days. So many new guys coming down that heard something about how good it is there and not knowing much else, willing to pay unheard of amounts. And ticos and ticas alike more than happy to take those gringos for every dollar they can (who can really blame them). The DR is the worst when it comes to this attitude. At least the Cien girls have some competition that keeps most of them from getting totally out of line. But the DR can apparently charge whatever they like and will still have no shortage of guys that come down knowing only about them. Makes me wonder who (or in this case, what) the real whore is.

It would be great if we could boycott the DR just on general principle, but unfortunately there's currently no other bar that has that large a concentration of indy take-out girls. Maybe if we found a decent replacement candidate and the word got out to the chicas that the DR was not the only place to find gringos, it would start to really take off (how is the Sportsmen's coming along in this regard?). Of course, I'd be perfectly content to leave all the Cien girls back at the DR for all those "highroller" don't-know-any-better newbies. Ah, but thats all probably just crazy wishful thinking and its late and I'm not thinking straight. Its time to hit the sack and dream of better times and places.

Not sure if that post is a personal jab at myself or anyone who chooses to stay at the HDR , I take your post as anyone who does stay there , has no hobbying past and throws dollars around as if they have no meaning.

Do you wish all members of the board to prance around the gultch pounding their chests pranting " El Presidente & NO CIEN " , sheesh dude , i've spent many years crusing Thailand and other Asian countries , it's apples and oranges , same as chica's , food , tourist attractions and HOTELS !! , nothing personal , but give the HDR a break for those who have no problem with it

Bing,
You're being much too sensitive by taking this so personally. I don't even know who you are let alone that you stay regularly at the HDR (BTW, I like the HDR acronym as it avoids any confusion with the DR used for the Dom Rep. used on other boards). The only vet that I know with any certainty that stays at the HDR is Lee and I'm sure he knows his way around. I'm sure there ARE many others. Presumably many of them in turn have tried other places or at least know the pros and cons and have made their personal decision to stay there based on a more thorough knowledge of the options and their personal preferences. But a good number of those vets just stay there because they've ALWAYS stayed there. Its what they're comfortable with and they aren't willing to even consider other alternatives. How about you? Have you ever stayed anywhere else in SJ as a valid basis of comparison or have you always stayed at the HDR and return there every trip out of some comfort level with the familiar? If the former, you are proof that my comments were only a generalization, but if the latter, then maybe it is you that should be considering alternatives.

Regardless of your personal situation, look around you. In far greater numbers and IN GENERAL the typical guest at the HDR tends much more to be mongers down to CR for their first visit or first few visits, have stayed no where else, probably have not done much research on boards such as this and were at best only marginally aware there even were any viable alternatives for mongers other than staying at the "world renowned Hotel Del Rey" prior to their first trip down. Sure there are other vets there, but if you compare it to the percentage of that type of whorticulturalist that stays at say the Presidente, I'm sure you will find a marked difference. Use whatever measure you want: the percentage that are members of an intenet board with a CR section, the percentage that are regular visitors to CR, the percentage that are repeat guests, the percentage that know you don't HAVE to immediately agree to CIEN/HR or that there are places which don't charge you $13-15 extra on top of an already comparatively high room rate to take a chica back to your room.

The HDR benefits from its widespread (but IMHO superficial) fame or at least the fame of the BM. I say superficial because there are many guys across the US who have heard tales of the action in CR and particularly the BM bar, but know little in detail of it other than that it is located in the HDR. The HDR can get away with doing things other hotels could never do because it knows even if it loses some hotel guests on repeat visits, most mongers only come to CR for that one time visit and of those that do return some will still come back to the HDR and put up with its drawbacks for the (dubious IMHO) benefit of being literally right on top of the action.

If you need further evidence of this look at these last few facts. When was the last time the HDR remodeled? And I'm not talking about expanding the casino section so they can make more money or moving their overpriced restaurant across the street. The HDR charges more for everything, from the ridiculous $15 chica fee, to the higher drink prices at the bar, the pricey meals at the DelMar, lower payouts in the casino, exhorbitant minibar charges, and room rates $10-15 more than nearby hotels with much newer and nicer rooms. Sure many of those costs can be easily avoided, but what does it tell you about the attitude of hotel management?

All this in exchange for its principal benefit of being on top of the action. Is it worth it? Thats certainly up to the individual to decide. Is comparing hotels like comparing apples and oranges? If that means are they different, then yes, but there are still elements that can be put head to head for comparison. Do I wish that all members of the board stayed at the Presidente and pranced around the gulch pounding their chests chanting "El Presidente & NO CIEN"? Certainly not, but now who is really casting aspersions on fellow board members. Incidentally, I've stayed at the HDR as well as 5 other SJ hotels, so have some idea what I'm talking about. I've never stayed at the Prez, though I certainly would. I'd even consider staying at the HDR again, if there were no alternatives. But I think there should be, and are, many good alternatives to BOTH hotels.

If I'm not mistaken, our esteemed colleague Dongordo always used to stay at the DR until he became fed up with the lack of customer service.
I believe he now stays at the Presidente.

(DG...if I'm mistaken, I apologize.)

The same guys that criticize the DR are the same guys that criticize the Beggars on the street that follow you to the Presidente. The same guys that freak out about the trannies in the Parque when walking back to the Sportsman's. I mean get real...

1) The fee as of last week was the same $10 (in colones I think 4600)
2) The hotel room is $60 (not much more if any from the Presidente or any other hotel)
3) Yes..the rooms are in need of remodeling, but...oh well
4) Some things are overpriced, but if you had the demand, and guys pay it all day and all night...wouldn't you?
5) you are on top of the action...I think $10 is worth it, to not have the beggars begging...the taxis scamming...or the trannies trannying!!! Plus, when you are done, it is a short ride down the elevator.

When I have a large group come down with me...I always book them at the HDR, and they are always happy.

When I come alone, I prefer the sportsman's, since it is quiet and the rooms are nicer.

Papichullo- First off, I really like your Costa Rica Toast... It's flippin' sweet! Amen to that.

I've never stayed anywhere but the HDR during my three trips, and the only reason I don't try anywhere else is that it's simply just so damn convenient to stay there if all you want to do is monger, for all the reasons you stated and then some.

I WILL expand my horizons on my upcoming 4th trip, with the help of some fellow CRT'ers that I have met via the board, but I think that it will be hard to top the experiences I have enjoyed staying there at ground-zero (HDR).

I THINK (IMHO), for a first-time newbie, the best choice, hands-down for a virgin trip, is to stay at the HDR. After the novelty wears off a bit (and HDR is very much a novelty), I think that where you stay isn't much of an issue... once you have your bearings and are comfortable with what/where your favorite mongering spots are and are wise in the ways of dealing with CR taxis and walking hazards, other choices will become just as good, and at a potentially better price with better quality.

Just my personal thought and opinion, I personally LOVE staying at HDR, and don't plan on changing that aspect of my CR trips in the near future.

Take care,

Ruffnutz
