This week I went with friends to a Chinese reataurant that one friend has been raving about for months. I may have the name wrong but I believe it is called Flor de Li. It was great....... easily the best I ve had in Costa Rica. It is an easy ride from downtown located in Sabana Norte. To get there go past the Nissan dealer and continue towards Rhomerser and take a right at the Subway restaurant. Flor de Li sp. is a couple of blocks down on the right. It is clean and has a large following at lunch and dinner. We were a group of 5 and ordered enough food for more than that. Every dish was fresh and outstanding. The restaurant also has takeout however there is no delivery.

I agree about Wongs. In fact I have reviewed it quite a while ago.

Great beef and broccoli and eggrolls. I order it all the time for takeout. Singapore noodles are good also.

I use to own a few Chinese restaurants on here.

Flor de Loto (Sabana) best value overall
Lotus (Pavo Escazu) IMHO, the best quality, but it's a little pricier
Villa Bonita (Pavas) has made a nice comeback. It se to be the best place, then they tried a buffet format that bombed and have since gone back to their roots. Pretty good dim sum for lunch
Casa China (downtown by courts) best dim sum by far.

East Garden is not bad, dirt cheap, and you can´t beat the location, half way between Sportsmen´s Lodge and New Fantasy.

You can get out of there for under 5000 colones a person if you don´t run up a bar tab.

I've gotten fried rice takeout at East Garden a half dozen times. Good to me. Not exactly a complicated dish, but I have noticed it is not as greasy as fried rice usually is in the States.

Dragon: Do the Chinese places in CR use that food preservative that they use in the states, I forget the name, D something or other, but it is commonly used up here in Chinese places. It gives me an unpleasant buzz.

I think you mean 'MSG'.

Casa China is always good.

Ask that your meal be made without MSG - since most Asian food is made to order, it should be no big deal.

I need to try some (all!) of the places recommended in this thread - I think the food in CR is poor as a general rule, and the Chinese food is some of the worst I've ever had (and this includes 7 years in Peoria IL   ) - so looking forward to trying some decent Chinese food.

(Instead of rasing the bar as far as food is concerned in CR - Chinese is a fantastic cusine - the Chinese food as a general rule in CR is awful; they cook "down" to the level of the Costa Ricans - I mean c'mon - chop suey    - its not even Chinese; invented in California during the days of the gold rush  )

They absolutely cook down the cuisine here to cater to local tastes. In Houston we have over 300,000 immigrants from China and Southeast Asia. If you go to either of the Chinatowns in Houston, the food is superb, divine. If you go to a strip mall in a suburb, you get the same watered down, neutered Chinese food you're getting, well, ... kinda like you're getting here in Costa Rica. I didn't move here for the Chinese food, that's for sure.
