On a recent trip to San Jose I asked three ticas some questions. First, I asked them how old they were the first time they had sex. One was 13, one 15, and one 16. Then I asked them how old the tico was. One was 28, one 34, and one 38. When the one girl told me the guy was 38 I asked her if she was forced or wanted to have sex. "Oh no", she said. "I wanted to have sex with him."

I was blown away. I had imagined a lot of 16 and 17 year old juveniles shagging all of these young ticas. It never really occured to me that it could be middle-aged ticos. Admittedly, this sample is pretty small, but maybe those signs in the airport should be moved to places frequented by middle-aged ticos.

It is so easy to blame the monger, and yet we likely represent less than one hundredth of one percent of the und***ge sex crimes in Costa Rica.

Sex crime is sex crime ........PERIOD.........Just because ticos don't give a fugg about it does not mean it is right......they do a lot of things I would never do down here........

Look at it this way: If you had a 13, 14, or 15 year old daughter and some 38 year old man phucked her, how would you feel? I know from my own teenage daughter, that girls that age are very easy to sway and frequently make irresponsible decisions. My daughter did not seem to mature(take responsibility for her actions) until about 18. Latin cultures have always been very sexual. Traditionally, fathers and brothers were very protective of the young females of the family. Most times, a chaperon was present whenever outside males were involved. Since the breakdown of the nuclear family and the diminished role of the church, everything is wide open now. The only positive in the current day is that birth control is available and most latinas don't want large broods to take care of.

And unfortunately, this is one of the things in my opinion, that leads to several generations of prostitutes in a family. There are not usually very savory male figures in the picture. Mom works the business and has less than desirable types of guys around. Guy starts looking at teen when mom's not around.. and so on.

good points. the fact that there is not a father around at all typically makes the Ch*ld more vulnerable. and the women don't seem to fight back. at least not in a prosecutorial sense. maybe the court system has a history of failure in these cases?

All good points - and I have had similar conversations, and can tell you what has been described is fairly common.

Not being a socologist, I can't quote you statistics on how it relates to x percentage going into prostitution, or how it harms them in later life - but possessing a fair degree of common sense, it can't be good.

Wrong is wrong, and regardless the education or level of ignorance on the part of the older male, they know better - for a 35 year old "friend of the family" to have sex with a 13, 14, 15 year old is wrong - period.

And to the OP - I don't think - and I've made over 35 trips in 15 years - anyone "blames" the tourist or ex pat for the problem - this is one that is cultural to a segment of the population. In fact when caught, the authorities make a big show of prosicuting the offender - South East Asia (where you hear of this more, yet never would I call it "common") Costa Rica is not

His point was , pay atention here, why does the single male traveler to CR fall unto a catagory... as in looking for young chicas, but it goes on with in the ticos

I think LostInSpace's post is pretty clear - he is deploring the fact MONGERS are usually blamed for sex crimes with und***ge women in Costa Rica, whereas the reality seems to be TICOS are the ones committing the majority of the sex crimes.

Having met LiS and knowing what a decent guy he is, I am sure that is what he meant.

Yes, my crime is being a bad communicator. I look at my original post and I don't see why anyone thinks I am defending sex with young girls. Truth is, I completely agree that for an older man to have sex with a young, immature female is wrong. I agree with the law. It should be a crime for men to prey on young women. I was just pointing out a personal discovery about who is having the sex, that was a new discovery for me.

I always knew that females in Latin America were having sex at a very young age. But I naively assumed it was with teen boys. When I found out differently I felt like the signs warning travelers about sex with und***ge females were in the wrong place. It seemed to me that local older males were the real problem and that instead of targeting gringos they should target the local mature males.

Thanks for everyone's comments, especially Miami and NHhank who know I could not hurt a fly, especially a pretty, young one.

glad thats cleared up. the topic is actually a really good one. hope the thread can back on track.
i really don't think that many of these scumbags ever do any time for this.
and many times its probably because they are family members.

This discussion does not fall into that category its about it BEING WRONG to have relations with gals of this age and as you can see we all understand the rules here. Bottom line the thread was more towards how young these girls start and who their first were being ticos not the fact that they are not 18.

JUST KEEP THE TOPIC ON THE RIGHT PATH AND WE WILL NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THIS.
