why were laurel tree leaves substituted for the original beech tree leaves in crowns of victory such as awarded athletes winning contests of strength or endurance?

the first Pythian Games awarded crowns of beech leaves.....the prizes were Fame and Renown.....but why were they changed to laurel leaves?
