That's not true. Never take a parked taxi, simple as that. If you do, know where the good ones are... For example Mall San Pedro, the taxis directly in front of the mall doors are all scumbags, if you go to the side of the mall, they are not scumbags. Typically anyone offering you taxi is one to avoid. Also a lot of taxis parked at the parks are legit.. You need to avoid the guys in front of monger hotels and places like el pueblo and it's pretty easy to not get ripped off.

I don't really care where you find them or what kind of taxi they are. If you know how to handle yourself and other people you will NOT run into this situation. You get ripped off because you let people rip you off period....trust I am not only the president but a client as well.......

The situation that lead to this is again, a few stupid Gringos not caring what they pay and throwing money around. The cabbies pick up on this and suddenly everyone is a target, Still, the Corrupt Maria is a nice add on to this concept, so the fuckers can point to it and claim that the ride from the DR to SL really does cost 10,000 colones.

I never take cabs in front of the DR and will normally not take one in from of the SL now that they seem to want 1-2K to take you less than a mile to the DR when the fare should be about 560 colones or about 1 dollar.

However, when I get a cab in the street, most often then not I end up with a nice guy Tico who chats pleasantly about the weather, church, safety whatever and it reminds me that there is a very normal life going on down there for your average "Jose Six-Pack" and it helps put things in perspective. I think that is a good thing to keep in mind that the vast majority of the regular cab drivers are good guys.

I mostly agree, Tim, however I don't think its so much "guys throwing money around" as it is guys who just don't have a clue about where NOT to grab a cab or any clue about what the fare should be.
