The situation that lead to this is again, a few stupid Gringos not caring what they pay and throwing money around. The cabbies pick up on this and suddenly everyone is a target, Still, the Corrupt Maria is a nice add on to this concept, so the fuckers can point to it and claim that the ride from the DR to SL really does cost 10,000 colones.
I never take cabs in front of the DR and will normally not take one in from of the SL now that they seem to want 1-2K to take you less than a mile to the DR when the fare should be about 560 colones or about 1 dollar.

However, when I get a cab in the street, most often then not I end up with a nice guy Tico who chats pleasantly about the weather, church, safety whatever and it reminds me that there is a very normal life going on down there for your average "Jose Six-Pack" and it helps put things in perspective. I think that is a good thing to keep in mind that the vast majority of the regular cab drivers are good guys.
