This past weekend, found an inexpensive hotel in Arenal. Having a special right now of $30 a night, tax included. Was very clean, had a great view of the volcano, hot water, A/C, cable TV and a nice balcony. As good or better than any Motel 6 I ever stayed at. I wished I had the chance to stay over night when I visited the Volcano, but my friends had other plans.

I'm confused, I've heard Arenal, La Fortuna, and San Carlos all referring to the same place; that little down with the volcano as its back drop.

Yes, different people refer to that area by different names. I say 'in Arenal' as a general catch-all for the entire tourist area around Arenal Volcano. In truth, Arenal is only the name of the volcano, La Fortuna is the small town near it and San Carlos is another name for Ciudad Quesada, another town about 45 minute south east of La Fortuna.

Brother PVT's hotel site has a good 5+ minute vid of doings in that area by a couple of travel writers. Good job.
