First time to CR. Spending a few days at the SL but would like to see some sights. Given it's the rainy season where should I visit - Manuel Antonio or Arenal?

October is the worst as far as rain. Either will be okay during part of the day but expect and prepare for rain. Much depends on what you want to do at either place. Manuel Antonio is a beach with a tropical forest park, good for viewing wildlife, swimming, surfing, atv, zip line, horseback riding, fishing, diving, snorkeling and the scenic views enroute. Arenal is a volcano that has been active for years until recently. It has hot springs at many of the resorts nearby that are available for swimming and lounging. Also available are zip line, horseback riding, hiking, atv, white water tours. Most of these activities are outside and will be effected by the weather.

Although one of the guys at the hotel told me that Sept was a great month for seeing Arenal - seems counterintutive, as its rainy season - any info?

Thanks - I've been there like 5 times - I should have been more clear in my post :) :) - last time we were at one of the hotels near Arenal (in March of last year), the desk clerk said Sept was a great month for seeing the volcano, and possibly seeing an eruption.

I saw Arenal erupt my 1st trip to CR in the 90's - was fantastic; unique; great to experience - since then - in dry and rainy seasons - nada - just curious if anyone had intel on the eruptions during Sept.

Arenal has been quiet for about 6 months now...no eruptions of any consequence in that time. Doubt anyone can say when it will become more active again. For now, all you see is a tiny line of smoke coming out the top most days.
