"The past isn't what it used to be, and it never was."
In any kind of "scene", there's always someone who says "It was better last month/year/decade".
I'm just gonna smile and look forward to my first visit ever in January.
I don't have to land someone who's a 9 in looks to have a good time. I think service and attitude count a lot more than looks do, at least for me.
What matters to me is that the scene in the Gulch is legal, well-mapped-out, and as a result, safe for newbie mongers like me. I'd like to get some more experience before wandering off where the terrain isn't as well known.
And one thing that ROCKS is all the people here who are willing to put up with my inane newbie questions.
I've answered a bunch of your questions, and they are good ones

(and read some of my past posts; I have zero patience for idiots, especially the older I get

)
Ah, the HDR....guys have always been posting it was better last year, in the past, and so on - All I'll say is in well over 30 trips over the past 15 years I have never had a bad one - and in May, just a few months ago, it was one of my best ever

Then again, I've always been a 1/2 full kinda guy
I've made no secret that I really don't like the HDR, either as a bar or a hotel - why? The value proposition is somewhat lacking.
But what (some) guys do is spend their time there and don't venture out - without writing "War and Peace" trust me - go to Sportsmans, MP's, bars, and you will soon have your own list of "contacts" - if the DR disappeared tomorrow it would not effect me.
OTOH, in my business life I have seen many examples of businesses highly dependent of the public's taste (restrauants, bars, stores, designers, hotels) that looked "bulletproof" "can't fail" "never going out of business" "the exception to the rule" that failed.
Nothing lasts forever, and the DR should keep this in mind.
