Hello all, I will be ariving on the 14th and have been doing my reading. (Thanks to those who have responded back)

I'm wondering is getting robbed a real problem. I'm not the baddest mofo to walk the planet by any stretch, but I am 6'4" 245lbs. Do I really need to worry about getting robbed? I figured take taxis at night, and its all good.

I'm not here to contest that I can be dropped; I want to know exactly HOW awareI need to be, and if maybe size is somewhat of a detterent. I just dont want to look like a tool if I have a money belt or whatever. So if I can keep things in my front pockets, I'd rather.

As has been stated on here many many times, you should be OK if you are aware of your surroundings, not falling over drunk or flashing wads of cash or jewelry. After dark I still suggest you take a cab for journeys of more than a couple of blocks. (i.e. DR to Presidente). I am well under 6feet and 170lbs and have never had a problem anywhere but I do use cabs after dark.

All joking aside...be ever vigilant. I know the guy who runs the Nashville South bar. He's an ex-cop and a large specimen of a man. He says the trannies are always hassling him and attempting to rob him. Doesn't matter your size. Lots of the thieves run in packs of 3 or more. I've personally been mugged, however I was in the wrong part of SJ at night. Didn't know any better at the time. No matter where I am at, I'm always looking over my shoulder to see who might be behind me.

Size couln't hurt but just be aware of what is going on around you.I always carry my money in front pockets and more than one and never carry a lot.In the day I walk everywhere and I'm fairly brave and not very big.Early evening I often walk places but am more cautiousI would say after 9 PM always take a taxi amybe from dark on.The one time I had a problem was walking where I shouldn't late at night after too much to drink.Learned my lesson , never go out on the streets after too much to drink.rbc100

I've spent a total of around 2 weeks in San Jose, and I have never felt the slightest bit endangered at ANY time. I consistently walk between the Sportsmen's Lodge, Del Rey, Presidente, Zona Blue, and the surroundings, including past Park Morazon at night. I am about 5'8, 275 pounds, and 45 years old. But I don't drink and am ALWAYS aware of my surroundings, and I'm used to living in major U.S. cities, such as New York, Boston, and Chicago. IMHO, San Jose is as safe as these places, and MUCH safer than Tijuana, for example. If you are used to walking in major U.S. cities, you can walk in San Jose. Don't walk when you are impaired, and don't flash your cash, and you will be fine. IMHO, the biggest risk you face walking between Sportsman's and the Del Rey at night is the risk that you might unwittingly pick up a transvestite.

As someone how knows how to defend himself very well, I know that my best wepons are staying out of dumb situations and running when I even smell the hint of one. My experince is that things are mostly cool there, but be smart, take cabs at night, and if you go to Tico bars at night, hunt with a pal.

Vulnerability is a face you wear.... If you walk scared your a target. Let people know you know they are there. Funny enough I will turn and stare.... By no means am I a big guy, 5'11 185-90 decent build. I'll square off with anyone if I have to....but my hands VS. a blade the odds lower. If in doubt, take a cab. a buck or two is better than a busted head, slice or your life. I take a cab 50% of the time. The walk from the SL to the BM doesnt bother me but I dont advise it for most.... it's the area between the two thats bad. Use your best desgresion....be safe!
