The following prices don't include taxes and fees.

Delta airlines

From Orlando to Costa Rica. $220
From Orlando to London $498
From Orlando to Rio De Janeiro.$3,000
From Orlando to Buenos Aires. $3,000

This was for December. Why does going to South America cost so much on Delta compared to the other places?

Verified this morning. These are the official prices for the same flight from Atlanta to San Jose departing from different locations. If departing from Orlando, Florida $250. If departing from Atlanta $583. If departing from New Orleans $601. I repeat this is for the same flight on the same day with the same return date. WTF!!!!. I can get a round-trip ticket from New Orleans to Orlando with the same dates for $136. That would make the price of my ticket $386 if I first flew to Orlando on my own. Directly from New Orleans $601. What is going on in Orlando?

December is peak season in South America. It's off-peak for Europe.

Orlando has low cost carriers (with one direct) flying to SJO and New Orleans doesn't.

Atlanta has Spirit flying to SJO but not Jetblue or Copa.

Competition sometimes brings the prices down on the major airlines. AA usually has cheap fares out of Orlando. Delta has had some cheap fares lately.

Having a family member that worked in the industry for numerous years, I can tell you the why and how but it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense outside the pure economics...
The how is airlines have big computers with complicated programs that base prices on supply and demand by looking at a huge host of factors from weather, previous travel patterns, economic indicators (by city), supply of seats on a given route, number of stops, competition flights and pricing etc.... Obviously, exactly how these programs and the algorithms they use generate prices are closely held secrets. The goal (why) is to maximize seat mile revenue or simply, always have a full airplane. As time for flights gets close and there are a lot of empty seats, a internet special is generated. Why most of those are so damn specific....this city to that on this flight.
Simply put, it's all economic theory judged by a big computer with a program written by some pretty smart folks and has nothing to do with how far you fly or how much it actually costs the airline to get you there...

For me delta is really the only option from ATL-SJO, the fight times and layovers on Spirit are just not worth it.

And it might be cheaper to fly to Orlando to fly back to Atlanta to go to SJO. In other word a round trip ticket from ATl the a round trip ticket from MCO?
