The IRS has ruled that tix bought before the tax expired, for use afterwards are entitled to a refund for taxes paid. This is not automatic by the airlines--you have to apply for it. Here's how:

Extracted from this is the IRS' Website for more info and to get an update on the latest:

The IRS on Friday reversed the above ruling. Don't bother applying for a refund.

Can't we do something with the IRS?! They are probably the most powerful 'institution' in the government, when you think about it. I've long believed that we should have a 'flat' tax, say around 18%. Most economists believe that would be the ideal rate, or close to it. Why must we have a tax code that is many thousands of pages long, that very few people can understand? Hell, we should be able to file our taxes on a postcard. Of course, that would put many employees of the IRS out of work, and probably many tax accountants as well, but so be it. Screw the IRS! Just another bloated government bureaucracy.

Tax his land, tax his wage,
Tax his bed in which he lays.
Tax his tractor, tax his mule,
Teach him taxes is the rule.
Tax his cow, tax his goat,
Tax his pants, tax his coat.
Tax his ties, tax his shirts,
Tax his work, tax his dirt.
Tax his chew, tax his smoke,
Teach him taxes are no joke.
Tax his car, tax his grass,
Tax the roads he must pass.
Tax his food, tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think.
Tax his sodas, tax his beers,
If he cries, tax his tears.
Tax his bills, tax his gas,
Tax his notes, tax his cash.
Tax him good and let him know
That after taxes, he has no dough.
If he hollers, tax him more,
Tax him until he's good and sore.
Tax his coffin, tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he lays.
Put these words upon his tomb,
"Taxes drove me to my doom!"
And when he's gone, we won't relax,
We'll still be after the inheritance tax

This Thread took a sudden and unwelcome turn towards the political.
I disavow this Thread.
