but Scotia Bank is a Canadian bank with branches in CR
I think in the sense of making an ATM transaction everything is simple and seamless but from my experience with my Canadian clients doing other banking transactions with Scotia Bank is damn difficult.
Technically the Latin American branches are completely separate from the Canadian branches. Andy often my clients have had a hell of a hard time making tranfers from their Canadian branch to a Costa Rican Scotia Bank..... most finding it easier, faster, and cheaper to bank using one of the national banks in Costa Rica instead.
I do have two American clients, who have mortgages in Costa Rica with Scotia Bank (about 5 years ago they were very good about doing both mortgages and auto loans for expats while no other banks in the country would).
I've never had to try doing anything other then a simple atm transaction so I can't comment on that, but for strait debit card use, Scotia Bank seems to work flawlessly. When I've used the other ATM's around CR, like the BCR ones, it seems to take a while for the transaction to process and you don't get any balance information. With Scotia Bank though, the transaction was instant and it provided me with my balance as well. Even though they are technically separate from the Canadian banks, I believe they have superior access to the ATM network in Canada. Another thing I noticed was, that although my account at home is with the Bank of Montreal, my Scotia Bank withdraw showed up right away on my account when I checked online. With BCR, last time I was here, I noticed the funds would be locked out but the transaction didn't show for a business day.
I always joke that the only place I ever had trouble using my Interact Plus debit cards was in the US, lol.
