Thanks for the replies.

I was about to book at Don Carlos but was suggested the "Hotel Dunn Inn" by one of the friends I will be meeting down there for a day or two.

I know that the Dunn Inn has a bad rep on this board but I figured that I will just go with what he suggested...

Also, the majority of the people I will be meeting are actually from Escazu so I don't know how hip they will be too the workings of the gringo gulch.

Anyways, I hope the Dunn Inn doesn't have well known reputation.

The Dunn Inn has a poor reputation for staff mistreatment, (see numerous past posts on this board ) but I don't think it has a reputation per se as an exclusively monger hotel. When I stayed there, there were certainly hairy-legged gringa female birkenstock-wearing tree-hugger birdwatcher types there too. Not that there is anything wrong with birdwatching, I happen to have a degree in biology.
I do take offense if they are critical of OUR hobby.
Live and let live.

Yea, I read the thread where BKtuna explained how he was mistreated. I'll be sure to make a visit or two to HLH to make it up though.

Does anyone know anything about the hotel down on the corner if you walk from the SL to avenida 9?

It looks like it was an old mansion and it seems like they were renovating it for over a year. It used to have the scaffolding on the sidewalk in front of it (facing av. 9).

It seems like a saw a sign up last time but I don't recall the name and haven't heard anything about it yet.

Any recommendations of hotels near the SL that does not have a reputation with the locals?

I'll put in my "Shameless Plug" for Hotel Castillo. It's a hotel that accommodates mongers (no chica fees), but does a good job of remaining below the radar.

Always had a good time at Castillo. It's so low key that I could bring a non pro and believe it wouldn't come across as a monger hotel. Room 11 is a good one.

The Hemingway is next to Castillo. There is a restaurant between the two of them. I don’t know if they are chica friendly.

My first hotel in CR. Rooms are a bit spartan but place has its own vibe. It would definitely do. Recommend room #4.

Except he apparently never answers emails. I've sent several. I am staying at the SL 4 nights but need one night somewhere else. Anyone know a valid email or how to contact the manager to reserve a room??? Poor customer service as far as I'm concerned.

Ok, what's the best/cheapest way for someone in California to call there. I'm just not familiar with how to do it since I've not done it. Do I have to buy a calling card? Do I have to add a pre-fix? How much will it be from my home phone, etc.? Thanks. I just usually do these things email cept sl has am 800 number. ;)

Hey Redfield,

Here's the e mail address to the Castillo, hotelcastillo@racsa.co.cr They will respond within a day, Darren is the man in charge. Also while your at the SML, you can walk within a 2 block area and fine hotels for your final night.
Coming out the SML, make a right, then another right, that will take you to the Castillo, Hemingway,Dunns Inn, Don Carlos and more. Coming out or the SML, make a left then a right, that will take ya to LaAmistad and a couple other ones.

Plenty of vacancys all around, you'd be alright if you decide to wait until you get to CR to get a room your final night.
Good luck.

Thanks, Duneslakes...am staying 5 nights...sept. 8 through 12...the 9th I'm on the waiting list at SL...I arrive 7:30 p.m. So my first morning I'll need to find another place if one hasn't opened up by then at the SL...I think I'd just feel more peace by booking something in advance and cancelling ( if I have enough time) if something opens up at the SL between now and then...otherwise I'll wake up my first morning there and have to walk around and find something ...
