"Shorts are for the beach"

That is a very common rule in many countries that I have visited. They are comfortable in warmer climates, but if you're not at the beach in CR, Russia, etc. -- shorts scream "I am a tourist" and sometimes "I am a target"

One thing for sure that has changed in the last 10 years is the dislike of americans. That is definately on the rise. Ticos like to blame others for their problems but so many americans have no clue. Strutting around with your 20 yr old (girlfriend) when you are 60 or so does not impress Ticos. Nor does leering at 12-16 yr old girls. Lately it seems everytime I am talking to a gringo he is leering at some schoolgirls like he is in jr high school. Believe me that reinforces the gringo is a pervert stereotype. I always tell these guys hey she is about 12 yrs old, oh they say but she is pretty. A young girl cannot even sit in front of the national theater without some diddler trying to offer her some money, I see it all the time.

There are also alot of Ticos downtown wearing shorts during the day also. I wear shorts downtown from time to time and I always thought what a petty thing to get upset over, a tourist wearing shorts.

At night in a nice restaurant , that is a different story. Tacky low class, makes you look like trailer trash. I read some report the other day which claimed that americans were the worst dressers while traveling in the world. The germans were the rudest.

bird dogging in public doesnt help ....a tiny catalyst to manifest an affirmation of the other 97 per cent of reasons they hate your guts...common sense and ones conduct being a direct reflection on ones family while interacting with rational human beings aint rocket science .........................youre dealing with weak sucks in cr...bullies without respite when youre outnumbered or vulnerable..people that fill establishments youll never know about... with way young girls in all sort of garb...habitually and without a second thought....they laugh about and ridicule your ass in govt meetings and on the street...theyve come to expect you bent over..assuming the position ..with a big goofy grin...just for access to a little over priced local pu*sy...and the absence of snowflakes in november..sadly.....they "know" its impossible for most gringos to function on the tico level...its a concept too bereft of decency ...logic..accountability...courage...ingenuity...creativity...the willingness to fight and die for those oppressed ...even the inferior and insignificant.. absence of the willingness to steal ..dissemble...and pillage the church ..relatives ...friends and the family dog just to "look
" like someone whose crawled out of a self defining oligarchal pseudo socialist democratic crater of a shithole into the sunlight ...for a few fleeting moments..people never hate for what others do ...its all about reconciling ones actions with projected self image generated by the modulation of archetypal constants and the spectre of compulsion and doubt.. guilt is not over something wrong youve done......its knowing that youre going to do it again ...no matter what..

Mi compadres and I obeyed this edit when we went to La Esquina, the Sunday before last and aside from a bad case of 4 letter word escape, we acted quite like gentlemen, even stared disapprovingly at a Gringo with Del Rey Deb in tow (probably CvCap ), who dared to enter in shorts and a T-shirt and Yes, he was the only person in a full restaurant so attired.

I am sorry, I wasn't clear. I was talking about wearing exercise clothes while not engaged in exercise and going into stores, eating in restaurants, walking around the streets shopping. I don't think you can wear those clothes anywhere like in USA. In the USA, I see people in the malls wearing gym clothes because it's comfortable and in college towns the students wear pajamas everywhere. That was a nightmare when I was in high school, where I came to school or went to the mall in my pajamas, but it's cool fashion wear with college students.

Well I just went to Panama City Beach and a 60 year old man who owns a famous restaurant came in with shorts and sandals . He fit right in , looked fine.

Try to do that in South Beach or Coral Gables.
