I agree with Scuba1 - any business has the right to refuse service unless they are practicing an illegal form of discrimination.

Decided to switch to jeans yesterday. Bad day to start, it was pouring rain most of the day and even with an umbrella, my jeans got wet. Wet jeans are very uncomfortable. Still, unless I'm cabbing it back and forth to one of the local mongering joints, I'm going to avoid shorts mostly as I don't want to stick out as a gringo as little as possible.

Mi compadres and I obeyed this edit when we went to La Esquina, the Sunday before last and aside from a bad case of 4 letter word escape, we acted quite like gentlemen, even stared disapprovingly at a Gringo with Del Rey Deb in tow (probably CvCap :D ), who dared to enter in shorts and a T-shirt and Yes, he was the only person in a full restaurant so attired. :D

You may very well be--no plans to check--but the word is usually used about women, after the statue of Aphrodite in Syracuse (the Greek , not American, city).

I'm no sure that is true these days in areas frequented by tourists. During the weekdays restaurants are filled with workers in business attire. Go into the Vasconia, Bar Malibu, Conde, Embajada, or other working class bar and casual attire is the norm.

I wear shorts during the day, as it sometimes is warm, maybe switching to pants in the evening. However, if you are traveling out of the downtown San Jose area, I suggest losing the shorts. Many places hold to standards and once I was not allowed to attend a production at a school. People were dressed casual, but shorts were frowned upon.

The culture has changed quite alot over the last 10 years or so. Most of the young ticos I work with wear shorts all the time. There are also alot of Ticos downtown wearing shorts during the day also. I wear shorts downtown from time to time and I always thought what a petty thing to get upset over, a tourist wearing shorts.

At night in a nice restaurant , that is a different story. Tacky low class, makes you look like trailer trash. I read some report the other day which claimed that americans were the worst dressers while traveling in the world. The germans were the rudest.

One thing for sure that has changed in the last 10 years is the dislike of americans. That is definately on the rise. Ticos like to blame others for their problems but so many americans have no clue. Strutting around with your 20 yr old (girlfriend) when you are 60 or so does not impress Ticos. Nor does leering at 12-16 yr old girls. Lately it seems everytime I am talking to a gringo he is leering at some schoolgirls like he is in jr high school. Believe me that reinforces the gringo is a pervert stereotype. I always tell these guys hey she is about 12 yrs old, oh they say but she is pretty. A young girl cannot even sit in front of the national theater without some diddler trying to offer her some money, I see it all the time.

Act like a guest.

Well put Zman. And I will add, that gringo behavior will not just get you disliked, it will eventually get you beat down. Hell, I came close a couple years back a couple of times when some old perv propositioned non working friends. If you think the trend has changed against North Americans in general, it is probably double that against sex tourists. Wrong move in Central America and the fam back home might not here from ya again.

I agree with this point. I said basically the same thing before. Maybe now that more than one person who actually has experience here beyond being a tourist agrees with this point, maybe, just maybe, someone might actually listen. But what do I know.....I am a newbie........

thats the shit that makes me cringe. i've looked on in horror while a young girl, albeit a working girl was chatted up on a busy street in san jose by a group of gringos. large crowds of ticos were present and the looks on the peoples faces was so unreal. i practically ran and hid around the corner. the hatred was palpable.
i remember catching myself staring at young latinas after my first ever monger trip to TJ. and then having the epiphany. just because you can pay for it doesn't mean you can Phuck anything that moves. i think a lot of guys never make the distinction.
its too bad because the rest of us have to live it down.

Hey Tim, I was with you and Keith at La Esquina that Sunday. Lots of fun hanging out with you. Are you going to do a review on La Esquina?

I have noticed, also, there are no joggers in the streets of San Jose. Given all the parks, you would think there would be more. To get to the point, I don't think any gym wear is allowed. I haven't seen one sweat suit, or anyone wearing sweats (long pant and long shirt kind) anywhere. Thus I would surmise that any exercise wear is dressing down to an unacceptable level here, in public.

I did see some people doing martial arts in the park once, wearing exercise clothes. That's about it.

I was going to go to Mas o Menos to grab some snacks in my sweats and thought better of it.

No. if you are exercising its perfectly acceptable. idk about walking around in sweats as a fashion but i see men and women at savannah park wearing spandex, exercise wear all the time.

I am sorry, I wasn't clear. I was talking about wearing exercise clothes while not engaged in exercise and going into stores, eating in restaurants, walking around the streets shopping. I don't think you can wear those clothes anywhere like in USA. In the USA, I see people in the malls wearing gym clothes because it's comfortable and in college towns the students wear pajamas everywhere. That was a nightmare when I was in high school, where I came to school or went to the mall in my pajamas, but it's cool fashion wear with college students.

A few years ago I had an administrative assistant who essentially ran my office. She was an immigrant from Russia who was very fashion conscious and proper. She would go shopping on her lunch break sometimes and would return shocked at how some of us Canadians dressed while out in public.

She used to tell me that the only people who should be allowed to wear sweat pants in public were Ch*ldren and mental patients.

Someone a few posts ago compared Costa Rica with Florida . Well I just went to Panama City Beach and a 60 year old man who owns a famous restaurant came in with shorts and sandals . He fit right in , looked fine. He is millionaire. If that same man walked into a restaurant outside the gulch in the same shorts and sandals he would look like a fool. Just saying. Uncle H.

Try to do that in South Beach or Coral Gables.

MH,
Not sure about South Beach or Coral Gables, but ANYWHERE else in Florida you can wear shorts and sandals including Palm Beach (Ritz Carlton), church  . It's usually too damn hot to wear long pants!!!
