Anyone ever take a date and enjoy some of the beaches on the Carribean side. Recommendations?

Yes. I have done that many times. There are some beautiful beaches just south of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. Just do a search... a lot has been written on this area: search.php?keywords=Puerto+Viejo&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search

Been to PV many times and think some of the most beautiful beaches in the world are in that area. Also some neat tourist stuff to do like an overnight with the local indigenous tribe. I've heard all the 'drug' stories as well but seems to be more a Rastafarian place than anything else... PM me and I can give you more details/help.

We have something of a "friend of the house", a guy named Colin who with his partner runs a lodge in PV. He can be a great help with info, area-specific Websites, etc. He's a TripAdvisor Resident Expert. Stay with him or not but do get in touch to your benefit:

Banana Azul is just north of PV and is very nice...stayed there a few nights. Very helpful staff and great setting. However, be advised most rooms don't have A/C. If you watch, Banana Azul has internet specials from time to time ;) The beaches south of PV are nicer but it isn't all that far a drive if you do stay at Banana Azul.
The drive is 4-5 hours from San Jose dependent on the road conditions especially through the park area.

una mas cosa....carry your Passport because the roads leaving out of PV are notorious for random police / highway stops / inspections...

Have fun....try the body surfing action at Punta Uva

Punta Uva is the bomb for swimming and body surfing the small breakers. It is protected by the point.

Check out Las Palmas hotel. A little more upscale and you can get a nice room right on the beach...literally.

Puerto Viejo is my favorite beach town in CR, I spend more time there every trip than San Jose.

Made that trip 10 years ago, beautiful but that road from Limon area on down was like the road to Dominical used to be, or worse, and longer, any improvements?

It's really not too bad a road from Limon to PV now. The normal potholes, washed out sections etc. but it's all paved and you can go 80Km/hr along most of it. They have also extended the paved section farther south past PV now.

It's been a few years... you're talking the stretch from Puerto Viejo to Mananillo... correct?
