Well I just bought the condominium that I have been renting in Escazu for 2 1/2 years. I have always given guys advice to rent and not buy here in CR. Well I changed my mind. I have been living here in CR for 7 1/2 years and have NO intention of leaving. The market, being as soft as it is,I was able to make a really good deal. I guess I will have to ammend my advice to "Don't buy until you have rented here for at least a year, and are pretty sure it's what you want." It's a lot easier to buy than to sell.

Congratulations Bob!

I did it as well back in March after my assistant told me how much I spent in 2010 on hotel stays when working from my Sabana office.

Are you planning on playing in the event at No Limit Club this Friday?

I have been renting in Escazu since January. Should look at the option myself.

If the r/e market in CR is anything like it is in the USA (especially in S. FL) its probably a good time to buy, if that is your desire.

I would not buy if I was renting and spending say, $500 - $600/month, as you still have to weigh the costs for each option - even if the place is the steal of the century, its not if it ends up costing double what you are spending now - and with condo's, you have to factor in the monthly maintence, as well as any special assements.

All this said, with the exception of a bit of a fixation on "Perpetual Tourism" issues :) :P  , (Sorry!) - Vegas Bob seems like an intelegent guy who probably made a smart buy, certainly in the right market to do so.

Congrats and best of luck w/ the purchase.

I am curious, what are the downsides to residing here? At what age or situation (personal, not regional or political) would cause you to move back to the USA?

I have known several Americans that returned to the USA after living abroad for awhile, e.g. Military, diplomats, contractors and say they said they felt like they didn't "fit in" for a long time. One girl I know, a military brat, spent most of her teens growing up in Europe and she thinks the USA is backward and unsophisticated.

I was just curious on what your take was.

Obviously, she's both smart and well informed

CRGolfer....Yes I am planning on playing in the poker tourney Friday nite.

Rolleratnight... About the only thing that would force me to move back to the States is health issues. I have been living here for going on 8 years, and I still love it. Being originally from Boston and having family there,I know the health care is certainly better there. If I had "any" thoughts of leaving,I certainly wouldn't be buying a condo here.
