A lot of Gringos come to CR with only shorts and flip flops. I know they are on vacation and want to be comfortable, but going to nice restaurants they should wear at least shoes. In the gulch it is probably OK to look like a beach person.
Most Ticos have very little money but when the go out to nice restaurants they try to dress up. As must know all of the Ticas do dress nice just about all of the time. Most of us are here to get away from these slob looking Gringas. "ever go to a baseball game?"
If you see any guy in SJ without a shirt on, he is looking for trouble. Beach attire is for the beach. Please respect the Ticos, This is their country, and we are vistors

I've noticed after living here only a little over a week, ticos don't wear shorts. I can't understand why, it gets too hot here in the summer for me to wear jeans or long pants all the time.

During the day I sometimes wear shorts with a nice shirt. But I agree it is pretty tacky wearing them out at night in the city.

That's because unlike our mostly casual culture here in the US, most of Latin America is culturally conservative, sometimes very much so (there may not be any religious states like Iran but Roman Catholicism is still strong). Shorts and sandals are considered strictly beach-wear, and in the inland cities people will dress more conservatively. I know, for example, in Rio that while the citizens may wear itty-bitty swimsuits on the beach, it is common practice for them to dress to the nines when going out at night. Medellin is the fasion capital of Colombia, and the people there taking dressing seriously. Remember an adage I saw here on CRT: "Just because it's a tropical country doesn't mean the whole place is a beach".

Oh, I never wear shorts nor sandals anytime, I consider them to be very tacky (now on hot girls it's a different story ). Even when hiking I wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts, made out of lightweight materials, even in the desert at 100 degrees. You actually stay cooler when you protect your skin from the direct sun.

Luckily my snazzy life saving Gore-Tex were never frowned upon last week.

About 9 years ago I was walking near the courthouses. I was wearing shorts and there were around 6 Ticos, teenagers standing there and they all stareted whistling at me. What can I say? I have not worn shorts in SJ sinse.

Nude sunbathing at the beach is not part of their culture, but is overlooked in most cases.

Jeans and an Imperial tee OK

I blend in like a tomato in a bed of roses why make it worse by adding shorts, sandles with socks and a big sombreo... sport fishing type
I rarely take chicas to dinner out side of thier element... If I do I will dress for the level of the place we are going and tell the chica to do the same.... I almost always fun on ethier kind of date

I lived in the USVI for a while.. tons of nice beachs... it is not cool for girl to walk around... away from the beech in a bikini top... and it went for bare chested men as well

One more thing... Ticos do wear shorts SL cab drivers??? but not at night

Two more things... Costa Rica has some nasty snanks and frogs... every see a tico wearing rubber boots in the dry season

F that shitt. Many days its just too hot to wear pants or jeans. I wear shorts during the day and keep a pair of jeans handy for the evenings.

OTOH. Wearing shorts after dusk/dark is a big flag to stick out.

This is changing generationally here also. I see a lot more Ticos wearing shorts and tennis shoes. Restaurant and club wear should be more upscale. I personally am more concerned with behavior than dress.

I've noticed this as well . When I wear shorts, I'm usually not the only one as I wear them on hot days. My default is pressed jeans but I don't like to sweat my balls off shooting pool at the SL.

My warm-weather/hiking/travel pants, they're what I wear for CR. Very lightweight, sun-protective, quick-drying and very packable.

I typically wear these shirts with them. Sun-protective as well. For hiking I have several of these shirts.

And of course Gore-Tex shoes for those rainy days!

In my exposure to this culture I will say this, I have friends that are from all classes in this country and wearing shorts is not a normal way to dress for the people in this country, but it is in NO WAY unacceptable. The only reason gringos stand out wearing that stuff is because they are gringos...... I wear shorts and sandals often during the day along with many ticos that I know. So all those saying that you should not wear shorts here are not completely correct. Like I said, a gringo wearing nice pants and a button down shirt still looks like a gringo and stands out. I feel that during the day, you can wear shorts and sandals around town and at night, dress accordingly to your settings. I do have to agree with BKtuna when he said he is more worried about how people act more than their clothes. Just use common sense and you will be fine. Again, this is just my humble opinion......

I wear muscles shirts to share my well-proportioned muscular torso for all to see. Are you saying these natives don't appreciate it? Odd. I thought it would be admired universally. Since I am callipygous as well, I wear a thong. Is this frowned upon?

This culture needs to be less conservative and enjoy the appeal of the human body.
