I have gone to Jurgens for years. It has good food and a nice atmosphere. I have gone with girlfriends and "girls" and there was never a problem.

Last week, I went with a friend whoo came down with me. When we went in they turned us away because he had sandals on. It was pretty rude, but we wrote it off to an inexperienced manager.

We went back last night and made reservations for a table for four, 2 guys, 2 girls. We were treated extremely poorly by everyone at the place except one server named Edguardo. Thank god for him.

The experience was so bad with everyone else I felt the need to let everyone know this place does not welcome americans or americans on dates. We should all boycott the place until they change thier attitude........

Fine by me, Nick :)

I've been going to CR since the mid '90's, well over 30 trips (longest 3 months) - associated w/ the board for 7 years - and I can honestly say I don't recall the place even being mentioned, or much discussion about it. But its possible I missed it.

Chubbs, Sportsmans, Machu Pichu, Soda Peru, News Cafe, Balcon de Europa, La Cascada, Esquina de BA, Tin Jo. Il Returno, Pork Chop Hill, Capitol Grill, the res't ar Colonial Casino w/ the 2 menu's, HDR's res't (and lots of others :) - to death) but not Jurgens.

Where is it and what was great about it in the past.

Find it hard to believe your friend was turned away (just) for wearing sandals - just sayin'

I think it's the place that if you were heading towards Mall San Pedro would be a couple blocks past the turn to Hotel M?

If so, it's an expensive restaurant frequented by upper class Ticos. They will selectively enforce their dress code and have been known to turn away customers in shorts or sandals.

There ave been a few references to Jurgens on CRT over the years. It is located in Hotel Jade in Los Yoses and if it is not the most expensive non-mirador restaurant in the San Jose area it is a close second.

That's the place, I have always been treated well there, but I was there and dressed nicely with business associates.

We were dressed fine and the chicas were very nice. They obviously do not want any gringos in the place.

Maybe they have changed - but the girls you describes as chicas might have been percieved as prostiutes with gringos old enough to be their father. Sometimes this is frowned upon in finer establishments. Don't get me wrong, I do the same thing and I am not criticizing. Just have to realize the reaction is not abnormal.

Peace, Love, and Happiness for all,

DR

Ps. phuck em if they can't take a joke

The way I look at it is you are doing them a Favor by telling us this. They have a fine business and do not need Americans bringing in young working girls trying to impress them. Stay in the gulch. Not a demand just an idea. Uncle H.

Overated and overpriced anyway, we are not missing anything. But why should anyone be ashamed or shy away from bringing a younger guest if appropriately dressed anywhere? Would you expect to get turned away in the states for doing so? I don't get that one, like you're doing something indecent or worse.

Discrimination is not frowned upon in Costa Rica the way it is in the US. Find another restaurant.

You old guys have to realize that you just can't bring your 20-year old chica to any place, no matter how well-dressed she is. The first impression is going to be a gringo sex tourist and his puta, and there are upscale restaurants that do NOT want that in their place, and you WILL be treated rudely or barred from entry. Costa Rica is still a largely very conservative country culture-wise, and while prostitution may be tolerated in some areas it is NOT respected, and the putas are seen as gutter trash.

Your post is not gonna be appreciated HikerTom, but I agree. Living here, I can tell you that the sex tourist thing is not gonna be appreciated or tolerated in many settings. And there are plenty of friendly restaurants and places to take the chicas without venturing into places where they don't belong.

plus 1. Lets get real. How would some of you feel if a couple of sixty year old men who were obviously from another country/culture were with two 19 year old hotties in a high end restruant in your home town? Say they dress in a way that is very different (perhaps in middle eastern garb, just as an example), and in general do not pay attention to cultural norms (sandels? Come on, in a Latin American city?    ).

My guess is that such a person group might not be treated with a great deal of joy and love in the good ol' USA all the time, but would encounter periodic distain.

As the last poster mentioned, if you are going to have dinner with working girls and it LOOKs like that is what is happening (i.e. more than twenty years difference and you are not from there, and it is a monger spot), than stick to places where you will fit in. Go out to the better spots with your buddies- I am sure you would not be treated the same way (but for the love of God, sandels or short at night won't play anywhere well in Latin America at night, save for perhaps beach towns).

Break cultural rules, and the inhabitants of a culture will bite back- happens the world around.
