So Costa Rica is not unique in this regard. It's something you just have to accept and keep an eye out for - xenophobia is prevalent in most countries.
Yeah, reminds me of when I was staying at the Westin in Guate City, with my EX (Non-pro or Semi-Pro) Gf, she asked the front desk clerk a question in the local lingo and the female clerk's attitude just dripped venom from her words. A few minutes later, I said something to the desk clerk in Spanish and her whole attitude towards the Ex GF improved remarkable, she even said to me "I didn't know you could speak Spanish" as sweet as could be. Sometimes its more fun just to listen and surprise someone.
