Expensive is a matter of perspective. Machu Pichu is CR expensive not US expensive. I Just got hit for $1200.00 for 5 people at an Italian joint in Ft. Lauderdale (the food and wine was good but holy shit). I like eating at the local spots and sodas as well but for a change of pace - Machu Pichu, Inka Grill, and many other restaurants are a good option. As to the "screw the gringo" game, it exists in every Latin American Country that I have visited and in most tourist locations as well. I am pretty sure they have a gringo button on the cash register at Mas x Menos! Remember the reason most of the members on this board go to Costa Rica is to get screwed. Just increases the avg. cost per lechee  .

Peace, love, and happiness for all,

Don Rico

If one knows C.R. one knows you don't go there for its culinary delites, that's the reason I'm not C.R. foodie seeker, but a C.R. Nookie seeker.
Mas y Menos has a gringo button       yea you're probably right.

The price does not bother me, the price for THE QUALITY is why I now pass.

There are plenty of Americans who treat foreigners like shit. I know that for a fact as I was married for a long time to a foreigner. I can't list how many times she got cheated and treated like shit, then I would call up and talk to someone and oops, that xenophobe found out she has an American husband and they're gonna get called out on their bullshit.

So Costa Rica is not unique in this regard. It's something you just have to accept and keep an eye out for - xenophobia is prevalent in most countries.

Yeah, reminds me of when I was staying at the Westin in Guate City, with my EX (Non-pro or Semi-Pro) Gf, she asked the front desk clerk a question in the local lingo and the female clerk's attitude just dripped venom from her words. A few minutes later, I said something to the desk clerk in Spanish and her whole attitude towards the Ex GF improved remarkable, she even said to me "I didn't know you could speak Spanish" as sweet as could be. Sometimes its more fun just to listen and surprise someone. :D
