I'll be in CR for the first time in a few weeks and will have 16 days for play. I have my first few days set in San Jose which should be candy store. I do want to see the country and get around, you know... have a real vacation. So I'm wondering if you guys can give any recommendations on what beaches to go to. I guess the requirement is having the white sandy beaches and ultra blue waters. Are there any true resorts in CR, like Club Med types? I just need to fullfill my personal goal of lying on the beach and being attended too

Your best bets for really beautiful beaches are Manuel Antonio National Park by Quepos, and Tamarindo up to the northern part of the country. Both are much nicer than Jaco. But unfortunately, if you want some chica pampering at the same time, you might need to bring your companion with you from San Jose. At Jaco, you are more likely to find companionship locally, but the beach isn't nearly as nice.

You might consider splitting your trip with the Dominican Republic. Beaches there are Carribbean and you have enough time. Plenty of chicas too.
Manuel Antonio is nice but the water is not clear. DR has resorts on the beach but make sure they are chica friendly.

Amen, brother. Most hotels at Manuel Antonio are, to my knowledge, chica friendly. If in the Dominican DO NOT chose an AI. (All inclusive) They are not chica friendly. I will definately be making another trip to the Dominican.

Definately avoid the beach at Jaco. Black sand beach. Just keep in mind if you drive to Quepos/Manuel Antonio it's like 4 hours. Brutal freakin' ride. I would fly if possible.

Costa Rica is NOT a pampered destination. It is rugged. If you know that going into it, you will have a great time. Mauel Antonio is a good place. There is a good beach, and also a semi private beach in the National Park. that is nicer, and not expensive. MA has good nitelife. Jaco is good for nitelife, but the beach is not much.
My advice is to hit San Jose for a couple days, find a chica to take with you. Sample her first!!! Make sure you will enjoy being with her for a few days at the beach. This is a common mistake made by guys.
The chicas like the beach, so you should be able to negotiate a good price. If she is very popular (ie Daisey) it will be costly cause she probably makes $300 per night easy going up and down the stairs at DR.

I was thinking about bringing the entertainment from SJ. What is the going rate for taking a gal out of SJ? If you make it several days, can you strike a more favorable deal? If your doing a multi day deal, do you pay at the end? If your going several days, do you get bargaining power, say 150 a night for 2 nights versus 120 a night for 5 nights... something like that? I guess the question is do you get leverage from extending the amount of days and a better price? It would be nice to know a fair price so I know I'm not getting taken advantage of.

Do you guys know how much it costs to fly from SJ to the Dominican? I was really wanting to go to Cuba for a week, but it looks like flights are around 500 from SJ to Havana. Thats a little to expensive for me... just to get to the destination. My goal is to have 3k to play with but of coarse I want to be a little frugal

As for the price of a companion. Everything is negotiable. I think if the chemistry is right between you and the girl, you can get a better long term rate. It's hard to get them to go for more than an overnight due to K*ds at home.

I have to agree Dominican Republic has awesome beaches.Sosua is a good beach town to hobby with many opportunities and several girl freindly hotels.I agree avoid the all inclusives as they mainly cater to couples and families.rbc100

BTW, the beach INSIDE Manuel Antonio National Park is rather spectacular by any standards - even comparable to the best beaches in Hawaii and the Caribbean. And unlike those other places, you share the beach with aardvarks and monkeys and other exotic wildlife. But it costs something like $6 per day per person to go into the park, plus a couple of bucks to get across the small creek leading to the park entrance (don't wade across, there are crocodiles in the water). The beach outside the park is pretty nice too, as far as soft sand and swimability, but it's not nearly so visually beautiful.

A friend of mine just told me about her adventures in CR last night. She told me about Manuel Antonio and pretty much described it like you did.. rain forest meets the beach. That sounds so incredible. She also told me that on the carribean side there are black sand beaches. What are black sand beaches? Is the carribean side worth visiting? Is there lodging available inside of the park? She also told me that Manual Antonio is the best place to do the canopy tour on the zip line thing.

On another note, can you guys tell me about how much i'd be paying for a chica per day to take out of SJ? I know everything is negotiable, but it'd be nice to know where my negotiations should lead...

To me, it's kind of like cinder. Black and not "sugary smooth" like a white sand beach.

The first time I took my chica to the beach I paid her $250 for about 36 hours. This is for sure on the high side in my opinion. In her case, she could have made more staying at the Del Rey working. I would start at $100. Remember you have to pay the hotel, food and transportation.

No lodging within Manuel Antonio Park itself (the park is tiny, only around 1 square mile of area) but there are dozens of hotels on the road leading to the park, within a couple of miles of the entrance, and several of these are within walking distance to the entrance. These places tend to be the most expensive rooms in all of Costa Rica (other than the Marriott Los Suenos). Expect to spend at least $100/nt, maybe $150/nt to be near the entrance to Manuel Antonio. I stayed at the Inn on the Park, at around $100 per night, and I can recommend it. It's a tiny place, with maybe 6 rooms, but friendly staff and a pleasant small swimming pool.

For chica prices from San Jose, maybe $100 per full day if she WANTS to go with you and doesn't have a Ch*ld care conflict, much more if she's just doing it for the money.

What? They're charging a couple of bucks to get across that small creek/sandbar now? When I've been there, that creek was only about five feet wide (in places) and about a foot deep. Maybe I've only been there at low tide? There's also another entrance, to the north, where the tours start. To get to the beach from there, it's perhaps a little less
than a mile walk up the hill thru the forest. I agree the beach there is secluded and very nice, but you have to beware of thieves...the monkeys will steal any snacks (and perhaps even other small items) you have lying around.

I went to MA last year on April 17th. I stayed at the very, very last hotel before the park entrance and paid like $55. I thought it was reasonable. I really don't remember the name. But it is THE very last hotel before the park entrance. Room had a safe, cable tv and air conditioning. Located right on the beach. (Well, you had to cross the street to get to the beach). They have an open air restaurant on premises.

The walk to the park entrance is only a few minutes. Gringos pay one price, CR residence pay another. Bring a camera to the park. As you walk through the trail the white faced monkeys are hanging in the trees. Sometimes they get so close you can almost touch them. Guarantee..you will see the monkeys. And nothing can compare to the looks that you will receive from the "vacationing families" as you walk through the park with your chica. The men have their tongues hanging out and the women look on in disgust. Such is life. Pura vida.
