Truth be told, our dear friend Circus has been troubled for years by the treatment he received from his family, and especially by Circus the Younger. He once told me that he was so depressed that his shrink advised he prove to his family and others in some special, meaningful way that he had, in fact, made his mark on the world.

It was then he decided to share with us the classic:

Damn...Here we go again...

I thought that I had closed this thread. But NO....Don Papi has decided to reintroduce my old man's video. Geeezzz, That video may be a classic in some sick minds on this thread but it is demoralizing to the Circus family. My mom pukes whenever she is reminded of it. A 60 plus gringo having his way with a young chica of only in her twenties. Do not look at this video. It is distasteful and should not be reviewed. Consider my family.

Just be thankful that it not the video with the donkeys. The family reputation would truly suffer.

I'd like to know how the two Circuses celebrated Father's Day together? I hope they made a home video or at least took some pictures.

The old fart did not show up for any "fathers day" He stayed at his run down trailer and refused to even talk with mom and me. Said that he had a hag over for some sex but he lies a lot. I am pissed off with his video and all of the other things that this idiot has done. Mom and me hopes that he dies soon Would like to see him die in the polluted ditch next to his wrecked trailer. Sorry....he is not worth keeping alive. I will let all of you know when he becomes room temperature.

YO there fellows:

I do not post on this venue hardly ever anymore. but wanted to put this thread to rest.
I'm not going to apologize for my inept son who sometimes is serious yet other times is tongue n' cheek. Frankly...he is a young jerk who reflects the problems between dads/ mothers versus sons and daughters.

Yea, I recently returned to SJ but actually had a quiet visit....at least for me considering my strange travels over the years. I didn't get arrested and I didn't expose myself to patrons at the Nuevo Johnson. Rumors follow me like flies to trash cans. Indeed, I have had a sordid past in the land of OZ but did a lot of good things also.

The video produced by DonPapi was a true work of art. DP, my close friend, is not only very intelligent but is also very creative. We had a lot of fun doing it and probably frightened the heck out of the locals while we were filming it at a local SJ park. Certainly, it was satirical piece done to reflect the many problems with hotels and a reflection of the poor, young and old, sleeping on the streets and alleys of SJ. A problem not only constant of SJ but of all countries including the U.S. I've know many of society's lost persons in CR. Locals, visitors and ex-pats who were down on their luck or just gave up and wanted to waste away. My close friends over the last two decades have witnessed this and a couple have been with me when they expired. Sad.

I noticed there was a survey on the Presidente. I have mixed feeling about my favorite hotel over the years. During my last visit I spoke to Mr. Mikowski, general manager and grand- nephew of the original founder of the Presidente. I will not disclose our conversations but he is dedicated to making the hotel a success. Personally, I do not know how since the News Cafe will no longer be open. That was a draw for international patrons and myself over the last decade. The "Propina law" in CR is definitely hurting businesses and needs to be addressed. It is another tax that chokes current and future business operations and in many situations...never trickles down to the employee.

I wrote a historical piece about the how this hotel emerged. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6808&p=51161&hilit=hotel+presidente#p51161

I will miss that hotel and it fine staff.

Take care all and best to you and families.

Circus

here is a copy of the post that Circus referred/linked....well worth reading now and also when he wrote it in 2005...I believe he also has stories and insight to the original CR rail system....can't remember now...getting old is a pisser.....we love ya Circus!

The world changed dramatically in the 1940's with the advent of WWII and the atomic bomb. That decade also launched a new wave of immigrants to the western hemisphere.....many of which came with no money and little personal effects that they carried by hand. Two men of European descent were among them and found their way to Costa Rica, Mr. Samuel Gudes and Mr. Estanislao Scriba. These men had nothing.....at least nothing of monetary value. What they did have was a work ethic and capitalist talents which eventually would give birth to several of the most successful businesses in CR.

The late forties brought radical change to this country with the 1948 Costa Rican Civil War at hand. Through this decade and into the next Mr. Gudes and Mr. Scriba sold clothing door to door by living very frugally and saving every colone they could. After years of hard work and dedication these two businessmen built a 4-story business building to house the Dama Elegante clothing store and offices. With superb maragement and marketing, the store quickly became widely known as the most exclusive address for women's clothing in the country.

In 1963, a second building adjacent to the Dama Elegente was constructed by Mr. Gudes and Mr. Scriba. When the 7-story building was nearly completed, the owners decided to change their original plans and turn the structure into a hotel. During this time on March 19, 1963 the Irazu volcano came to life after a 20 year sleep and erupted. The volcano made known it's presence to welcome the arrival of U.S. President John F. Kennedy who visited Costa Rica and motorcaded down Avenue Central that same day. Many people crowded around Avenue Central cheering the President's visit with vocal applauses of "el Presidente, el Presidente", which inspired the building's owners and accordingly became the hotel's name. Presidente.

In 1974, a 4-story building was added to the complex and housed an applicance store on the lower floors and the Dama Elegante in the top two floors. Because of growing demand for the hotel's services, an 8- story tower addition was begun in 1991. Another historical moment arose as this project would be the first building in Costa Rica to be built using a steel frame structure. This new wing housed 65 new suites, a restaurant, tanning deck with hot tub, suana and steam room. Unfortunately, Mr. Gudes died while the new wing was under construction and Mr. Scriba died a few years after its completion. The new management group took over operations in 1996. Since that time, the Presidente renovations have been an ongoing project and will continue as clientele needs require change. Remodeling of the suites, updating of all electric and mechanical systems, the addition of a 4000 square foot, marble finished front desk and lobby. Perhaps one of the most visual new landmarks of San Jose.....The News Cafe restaurant and bar offering a delightful menu of food right there on the sidewalk of the busiest pedestrian boulevard in the country.

In the areas where the Dama Elegante and the appliance store once stood, the 3- story Fiesta Casino, a KFC restaurant and a Sports Lounge now exist. Soon to be ready, a new remodeled section of rooms including 29 junior suites.

As a traveler to Costa Rica for many years and as guest in a number of hotels and inns, I have found the Presidente to have one of the finest staffs with customer service and satisfaction regimented by employees and managers. The owner's continuous investment in improving the facilities is unparalleled to my knowledge in that city. Mr. Mikowski, the general manager, is a true visionary with his sense of the hotel's needs and his business approach. And, by the way, he is the grand-nephew of Samuel Gudes. It's inspiring to know the baton has been passed and that this prominent hotel and properties flourish into the 21st century. Two men, Europeans, who arrived in Costa rica with nothing.......would be very proud.

I would like to express my thanks to Mr. Mikowski and the staff for providing information that made my article possible. Okay......even old Circus gets serious once every couple of years.

I hope the newbies realize from the recent posts what a treasure Circus is. Personally I consider him a hero. His son, Circus the younger is however a dark soul full of bitterness and spte. I had hoped over the years that he would grow out of it, but now believe he will be a miserable insufferable prick for life.

Pitiful is as pitiful does

BK....I have serious doubts that most of the newer members on this site have a clue as to what you and me do to escape the every day rigors of life. The board has change very much from the old days....but a number of members now have renounced the history of past postings and only care for what is in it for me now. I have no problem with that.

I use to go back and get acquainted with members of old and their past contributions when I was a newbie on the former CRS site. It was full of good writing and an interesting portal to the gulch and outer surroundings. Too bad Rico cannot bring back the text from those years. It would be of interest to see how they compare with today's postings.
