Apple is finally selling an unlocked version of the GSM iPhone 4 in the U.S.
The unlocked 16GB iPhone 4 is $649 from Apple, with the 32GB model going for $749
An unlocked version means users can upgrade without committing to a new contract

Aside from being beneficial for travel -- GSM is essentially the world standard when it comes to cell phones and travelers will be able to use the device on other GSM networks outside of the US.

SOB! I just spent a lot of time and $800 buying one from Canada and having it shipped to the U.S. Oh well I needed it May 26th. Works great in MDE. I love the googlemap/gps to find casas.

They sell unlocked iphones for as little as $270 bucks here in Ottawa (older refurbed models). But they sell out fast. I picked up a Motorola Razr for just $45 last week to use on my upcomming trip to CR.

When I was researching the phones, I also read about an MP (member of parliament's) bill before the senate to make locked phones illegal or at least to allow everyone the option of being able to purchase a phone unlocked direct from the phone companies.

that's what iphone 3g/3gs goes for. but a iphone 4 is the same price from apple even if you lose it.
