Dude, I booked a ticket to the States 4 weeks in advance. I'm tall and sitting in a middle seat. At least 60-70% of the seats on the plane you had to pay additional for. i'm just gonna calmly tell them it is best to put me in an aisle seat to ward off one of my attacks..

Reading that post about Continental air fare of $79..

American Airlines has on their web site summer time fares of $94 from Orlando to San Jose.. and $98 from Miami to San Jose... Check the dates you want to fly and you might catch one of these fare deals...

The kicker the $94 flights at Orlando has plane change in Miami catching the $98 flights and some higher price flights from Miami to San Jose ...

Continental is a for profit corporation, and I'm guessing if they are charging $79 for the exit row someone is willing to pay it. Capitalism at it's best. I fly Spirit out of FFL, and they charge an extra $60 each way for the big front seat, and it's worth every penny spent.

Wait till the plane takes off, then just get up and navigate to an exit row seat and sit down... Works for me as they usually never sell them pre-flight on Cuntinental...

When was the last time you flew to Costa Rica? They reduced flight frequency to a point that planes are 80-100% full at all times from what I've experienced for about the last 2 years.

Yeah, the exit row seats seem to be gobbled up by preferred customers. I rarely see an empty exit row seat anymore.

If you can, go online say 1-6 hours before and you can upgrade pretty cheap to an exit, bulkhed, or 1st-biz class on CO.

I actually witnessed a guy who tried this on my last flight...the flight attendant asked him nicely to go back to his own seat saying these are premium seats..you have to pay extra for them.

You used to be able to just get up and move to exit row seats, but now that they're paying seats that doesn't happen. Twice I've seen flight attendants moving people back after they tried this tactic. No premium seats for free. On top of that, the people who did pay for the seats don't appreciate somebody freeloading one and taking up what could be extra space for them. They squawk and rat the seat-movers out.

Last time I flew to San Jose was last November for Thanksgiving... Did it then with no problems... Did it 2 weeks ago on a round trip to LAX... Both flights on Cuntinental...

You got to give the airlines credit for finding another way to increase their profits. If people are willing to pay extra for these seat, why not charge them for it? My brother used to always get the exit row seats when he showed them his police badge, they would even bump passengers out of these seats to accommodate him. The other day, he was complaining to me that he was turned down on his last two flights. I told him to get used to it, because it's only a matter of time that all the airlines will start charging for this convenience.
