I tried an Imperial recently, in preparation for my trip down in April.

I hope I like Bavarian Dark better.

Some small breweries in America make excellent beer. We have a local one in Houston called St Arnolds. They make some small batch beers that in my book rate a 8 or a 9. Now the mass produced beers in America - yech!!!!

Urban legend or da trouth... you be the judge.

On one of my first trips to CR late in the last century it was related to me by a trusted advisor on all things Costa Rica and one hell of a great bar room beer hall whore house bull shitter from which my ugly twin took his handle.

His name was Three Feathers. His story on Imperial was as follows.

In 1946 a group of Germans arrived in Costa Rica and purchased a small brewery there with gold and silver fillings. The fillings of course where from the teeth of death camp jews. Have you ever looked at the label of an imperial beer. Very German Iron Cross like.

Between the time of 1946 and 1948 or 1949 before Costa Rica outlawed the Military, the breweries were nationalized. The Germans (Nazis) were arrested as war criminals and their assets seized including the Imperial Brewery.

During the siege of the Military compound / fortileza the Hotel Del Rey played a significant role. An 80mm canon was carted by hand up the side stairwell (were the service elevator is today and you pay the chica fee by the side door entrance). Those ticos, in the spirit of Juan Santamaria from those lovely William Walker days, carried that big gun up 6 flights of stairs and proceeded to rain fire from the high ground upon the military fortress below. It was not long before the military quit the fight and today CR is without an army making it the Switzerland of Central America.

There are however, various gold and silver fillings from the death camps in Nazi Germany that have funded a nationalize brewery called Imperial.

YMMV.

Imperial has been available in Central Illinois for at least a year and half. Now, if I could only find Presidentes from the Dominican, I would be super thrilled. Imperial gave me the worst hangover I have ever had in my 46 years of existence on this planet.

I thought about starting a thread about cr beer and the hangover effects. I know my bud light limit in the USA, but I've been unable to translate that to beers in SJO. It seems that no matter the beer, even when drinking less than I would at home I still get nasty hangovers.

Anyone share this problem? What's the best beer in regards to managable hangovers? I'd hate to switch to hard liquor down there. It's just not the same.

funny, just the opposite for me.. I could drink the CR beer all day and night and never have any hang over. Matter of fact any foreign beer any where ( made in that county and not imported name brand) never gives me a hang over. But America beer gives me a hang over to no end along with the scooting two step the next morning. And I am a beer drinker on vacation, not much any more at home for that reason

But that is just me. My buddy who owns a bar says it has to do with the carbonation American brewers use and the foreign ones do not.. However I do not know that is right/true for a fact , even though I did here it in a bar so it must be TRUE :D :D :D :D

Heiniken and Corona are available at SL, correct? Are they brewed in SJO? If so I'd imagine that they have the same effect as the national beers.

My understanding that Heineken is brewed in AMS and shipped in large containers, then bottled locally.

But what I am sure of is Heineken IS NOT the same around the world. What they have in AMS is vastly different and vastly better then in the rest of the world IMHO.

Looking at my can in m hand from the Brewery in AMS the beer is a Pilsener. One night at my buddy's bar we had a tasting of the beer I brought back from AMS and what is available here , every one agreed that what we have here is not the same, but differed on which one was better.

Great day, visit the brewery for fresh from the tank beer then step across the street for dinner, and after that stroll a few doors down to Societe Anomie to top off the night

Imperial gives me a headache if I drink more than 1 or two- now Bavaria Light is just fine for me!

Try Imperial Silver, I used to drink Imperial regular, and burned out on that. Chubbs has a selection of US beers available in a bucket (Bud, Coors LIght, maybe Miller Lite) but I have not seen a lot of people ordering them, and no I am not a shill.

So, can anyone testify that Heineken in Costa Rica doesn't give a bad hangover?

How many CR Heinies are we talking about?

I'll put it this way, the 10-12 bud lights I'll drink on a Saturday have never given me half the hangover that 6-8 imperials give. Keep in mind I'm 6'6" 300lbs.

The amount of alcohol should be roughly equivalent between the quantities of the two types of beers, could it be the factor of when, what and how much you might have eaten? It sure makes a difference with me. Cheaper beers, of course usually give nastier hangovers. Although the finest champagne will always give a bad hangover, if you have more than two glasses. Chicks love it though and it will often lead to a tumble in the hay, but I'm rambling.

Somebody earlier in the thread hit it on the head. It is the impurities in the beer here that causes the worse hangovers.
