ditto pizza man and pac 55, try mansion wing at SL ( good luck getting a reservation recommend booking a month or 4 in advance) or La Amistad aka "train station" has some nice rooms. HLH also has nice rooms, it just doesn't have a lot of curb appeal.

Also ditto what others have said, if your expecting 4 seasons/5 star resort/hotels....CR might not be for you.

CR is not a third world country but it ain't the French Rivera either.

we go there FOR it's slightly rough edges.....it's like a sailors liberty port.

Let us get some perspective. Costa Rica HAS a Four Seasons, a JW Marriott and whatever else that was mentioned (except the Ritz but I'm guessing, coming soon) but they are all the various beaches where people usually go. In the city, the best hotels are :

1. Real Intercontinental - hands down the best in the city. Chica tolerant I believe. They will charge for chica occupancy. They do have a lot of traffic and you might slip by the front desk with a chica.

2. Grano de oro - Exceptional five star restaurant in the middle of the hotel. HOWEVER, unlikely that this is chica friendly.

3. Barcelo San Jose Palacio - Chica tolerant. Will charge for chica.

4. Also not awful but not like #1 or #2 - Hilton in real Cariari - Chica friendly. A little off the beaten path but you may like this. You bring your chica from the gulch and you are away from the madness of it all. Just you and her enjoying some quality time. Food is not bad either.

I stayed 2 nights at the Beacon in Escazu, very nice place but not chica friendly. You will be ok if you wife up and check in with 1 lady, but do not expect to get more than 1 in for your stay. The rooms were clean and the beds were incredible.
