Although I walk everywhere in that area at night, I would recommend taking a taxi. If metered, $1.00, $2.00 at most. I'm always vigilant about traffic and worry morre about a drive by robbery.

If a tranny approaches you, say, "No me gusta los hombres."

I have to say, after reading this topic, that the idea of groups of ravenous transvestites roaming the streets at night, looking for gringos and other folk to rob is very funny to me.

Coming from a big city myself I am aware of the dangers that seedy areas posses at night time, but dangerous roaming tranys is not one of them.

It was my first time in San Jose this Feb. I've been all over Asia and particularly to Thailand many times, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, etc... I've been to the PHILLIPINES once. Anywhere in downtown Manila is ( I would guess after I was mugged there) is a thousand times more dangerous ( day or night) than the walk from Dunn Inn to the Del Rey( even at night).

All I saw walking from the Dunn Inn to the DR was a few trannies on a few corners. Just cross the street ahead of time if you are a trannyphobe. That said, no reason not to take a taxi for a couple bucks. Just my two cents.

redfield since you posted that you were mugged ...I would think your on the other side (play it more safe than you did before you got mugged) .....as for me my first years in san jose ...I played it safe ....looked at every site and post and came prepared for what I thought would be evil people trying to mug me or worse .....

What happened to me the first 4 years ....nothing !!! then I let my guard down and got hit (you can look at one of my old posts) ...but I was in the wrong place ....wrong time ....and stopped thinking about what can happen....and it did !!!!

For me now ...even 2 years after getting robbed .....I am very carefull to the point when I am with a few different wingmen that throw being safe into the wind .....I get pissed ....and tell them they are foolish ....and I get the response that I am a pu*sy .....but the way I look at it now ....why ruin your trip or change your life .....by not playing it safe

Chilimike,

Note I said there's no reason not to take a taxi. My point is that I think San Jose is way safer than Manila ( and lots of other countries). Still, for two bucks why not take a taxi?.

During my recent 10 day trip, I walked from the SL to Amistad dozens of times, by myself and with chicas. Sometimes during the day, but at least twice a day at night. I watched the streets like a hawk, kept my ears open and stayed really quiet. Passed a few ticos on the street and nothing happened. I would normally get a taxi, but I just can't imagine getting a taxi for a two block walk. Yes I know I was taking chances but I figured they were measured risks.

I agree 100% with that walk as when I stayed at the Amistad I went back and forth (latest time maybe 10pm) but walking around the Dunn Inn ....different ball game .....at least leaving the sportmens you can walk in the middle of the street ....and you have employees out in front of both places .....walking to the sportmens or DR from the Dunn Inn or back ...just a matter of time until your number is called (at night)
